Title: Place Value Through Hundred Thousands

Objective:
SWBAT
Read and write numbers through 999,999
Identify the value of all digits in a six digit number.

2. Demonstrate an understanding of place value concepts.

Procedures:

1. Review Place Value of Numbers through 1,000. Show Ones, Tens,


Hundred, Thousands. Use unifix cubes in demonstration and to
show that each place value goes up by 10. As numbers are read,
write them into the place value chart. Practice reading the
number out loud.
2. What number is in the ones (tens, hundreds, thousands) place of
these numbers? Write numbers in expanded and standard form.
Write word names for numbers.

8. Call out numbers (540; 301; 1,708; 25,032; 30,207; 127,809)
that students will write down. (Teacher) Watch out for zero place
holders.
9. Write down a number on the board. Have students identify as
many place values as they can. For example: 1,234. What place
in the 3 in? What is its value?
10. Point out the use of commas. Explain to students that the
second group of three digits from the left is for “thousands”
11. Emphasize the use of zeros as place holders so that the
value of the number doesn’t change.
