II/ Materials and Methods

To collect the data, a questionnaire was developed. The first question is used to define
two different subjects in the survey; from second question to fifth question, the use of
Vietnamese in English class is proved; and the two last questions are about the attitude of
students toward the issue.

Before the survey was carried out, the questionnaire was trialed by five first-year English
major students of Hanoi University and five students from University of Transport and
Communications on availability basis. The pilot proved that the English questionnaire
was too demanding for some students from University of Transport and Communications.
Thus, a version of questionnaire in Vietnamese was made.

The subjects of the study consist of 25 students from University of Transport and
Communications and 25 first-year English majors from Hanoi University. They were all
selected on availability basis.

The survey was carried out at two universities in March, 2010. All the subjects were
chosen from one classroom of each university. First the students were given a brief
introduction about the study as well as its purpose. Then the handouts were distributed
and all the handouts were collected after 20 minutes.
