Podcasting: The Beginning
 The first step in podcasts allowed
anyone to become a social
commentator or journalist. Anyone
who wants to communicate their
thoughts with the entire world can.

 The next step in the history of

podcasting was audio blogging.
Now, instead of writing down
thoughts people could record them-
selves speaking and post to their
blog.
What is Podcasting?
 There are three kinds of podcasts. An
audio podcast is usually an MP3 file and
is the most common type of podcast.
 Enhanced podcasts can have images to
go along with the audio. They can also
have chapter markers, making it easier
to skip to different portions of an
episode…
 Video podcasts (VodCasts) are movies,
complete with sound (Harris and Rea,
2009, p. 138).
Popular Uses of Podcasting
 Self – Guided Walking Tours – Informational Content
 Music – Band promotional clips and interviews
 Talk-Shows – Industry or organizational news, investor news,
sportscasts, news coverage and commentaries.
 Training – Instructional informational materials
 Story – Story telling for children or the visually-impaired.

High School Language Arts
A Simple Needs Assessment:

My students needed help with MLA research papers; the current handouts were not
enough.

A Simple Solution:

A video podcast could effectively address both visual and audio learning styles, in
addition to being more engaging to today’s high school student than a multi-
page handout…
There are literally hundreds of thousands of already created free podcasts
available…

“Why reinvent the wheel? If an

appropriate podcast on writing
research papers is available, why not
use that?”
