PREFACE

This is a new, improved and expanded edition of the one

first distributed in August, 1994. In this edition more terms

and expressions have been included, typographical errors have

corrected and two new categories, namely, Discrimination and

Racism, and Georgraphical Names, have been added. The names of

two previous categories have been modified slight~y: in the first

'case, Law Enforcement is now Law Enforcement and the Court, and

in the second case, Underworld Societies is now Underworld

societies and Street Gang Groups. A minor point.in the original introduction has also been clarified. Other than these

improvements the organization of this new edition remains the

same as before.

I. DITRODUCTIOH

Cantonese is a colorful colloquial language spoken in the City of Canton, Guangdong Province, China, and nearby cities like Hong Kong, Macau and others. (See map on page vi ii. ) Most Chinese people in the US, especially those who conduct business in Chinatowns across North America, speak this dialect. Because it is not the main-stream spoken language of China, Cantonese does not always use standard characters when expressed in written form. The main-stream or official spoken language of China is Mandarin, the dialect spoken in 'the City of Beijing. The written form of Mandarin is also the official written Chinese language. Cantonese differs from Mandarin in pronunciation, tones, intonation, and diction, but not in sentence structure or grammar. The great majority of characters used in written Cantonese are standard characters. However, many Cantonese slang terms use standard characters for their sounds but not for their intrinsic meanings. As a result, several different characters which have different meanings but sound the same or nearly the same may be used to express the same idea in spoken Cantonese. Quite a number of special characters not in common use or not used at all in Mandarin also appear in this colloquial speech. Official documents and proper or serious literature never utilize written Cantonese.

No system of Romanization of Cantonese is universal. The Pin-yin system is used for Mandarin only. The system used in

v

The entries in this dictionary are some of the more common

this dictionary is a combination of several systems of

Romanization of Cantonese. Tone markings have been deliberately

left out in this edition.

terms, phrases and expressions used by Cantonese-speaking gang

groups in the us. All the gang slang or codewords are marked

with an asterisk. These terms were compiled' from several sources

in the U.S., including electronic surveillance overhears,

convicted Asian gang members, informants and cooperating witnesses. Of course all these terms are well-known in Hong Kong which is probably where most of them orginated from in the first

place. It should not be surprising that cantonese-speaking gangs also use many legal or formal terms for which there are no slang equivalents. These have also been included in this dictionary together with terms and expressions that are in common use in

Chinese-language newspapers and magazines.

The entries have been grouped according to criminial

categories arranged alphabetically. In case an entry qualifies

under more than one category, it will be repeated.

All the characters have been written in the traditional or "faan tai, tit" "style. No simplified characters are used in

.:" .. "& this edition.

Cantonese-speaking criminals u~e a lot of Cantonese

vernacular which does not always have an exact translation in

English. In such a case, an English expression corresponding to

vi

the same usage is given. Vulgar expressions have been translated into English of the same or comparable level of vulgarity.

The < ••• > brackets signify an example in usage.

If the literal meanings of the characters can help increase the understanding of the expression, then they are enclosed in square brackets [ ... ]. Otherwise they are left out. The slash, I, between the Romanization groups the characters together for easier correspondence with the literal meanings of the characters given in the square brackets.

The { ... } brackets give the origin or formation of the expression if it is well known.

To the best of the compilers' knowledge no such reference material is available to law-enforcement officers who need to understand the criminals' jargon to assist in investigations and prosecutions.

The purpose of this project is to provide a "starter" dictionary that can grow with additions from law enforcement officers investigating Asian criminal activities as well as academic and community sources interested in Asian gang qulture. In order to get the most benefit fr~m this dictionary, a user probably needs to have some familiarity with Cantonese.

It is hoped that various segments of the law-enforcement community will also compile similar dictionaries in such languages as Vietnamese, Cambodian, Thai, Laotian, Korean and others. Suggestions, additions, corrections or amendments'are requested to improve this initial effort to understand the

vii

current common language of the cantonese-speaking criminal. Recipients' comments will be greatly appreciated. Please direct all correspondence to Fritz chang or Charlie Hickey, Federal

Bureau of Investigation (FBI), One Center Plaza, Government

Center, Boston, Mass. 02108-9970. (Tel.: (617) 742-5533; FAX:

The vendor is not cheating the customer by giving him less than what the customer asked for. Al though the Ching Dynasty was eventually overthrown in 1911 (not by the Triad), the Triad continued to exist and prosper but changed its mission to illegal and criminal activities. Particularly active in Hong Kong, it has developed many branches and has long spread to the US, Canada, Europe and Australia. These are the underworld and organized crime groups of China. orginally it was also known as Hong Moon (Red Door), a name which is still in use today.
