SHERIFF JERRY CLAYTON WARNS DRIVERS

OVER THE LIMIT UNDER ARREST

Special Traffic Enforcement

If you’re over the limit, you’ll be under arrest! Beginning August 19, 2010 the Washtenaw County
Sheriff’s Office, U of M Public Safety, Pittsfield Public Safety, Milan Police, Saline Police and
Chelsea Police will step up enforcement and be on the lookout for impaired drivers in Washtenaw
County on and around the Labor Day Holiday Weekend. The special traffic enforcement period takes
place from August 19 through September 6.

Law Enforcement Officers will work over 200 hours just in Washtenaw County designated for drunk
driving enforcement. This special traffic enforcement is paid by the federal traffic safety funds
administrated by the Office of Highway Safety planning (OHSP).

Alcohol-involved crashes tend to be more serious than non-drinking crashes and injuries are more serious
for drivers and passengers who have been drinking.

Last year there were 18 alcohol related traffic crashes during the targeted time frame in Washtenaw
County. Of those 18, eight resulted in serious injury; and one resulted in a fatality.

In Michigan, a motorist can be arrested for drunk driving with a .08 blood alcohol content or higher. A
drunk-driving conviction carries with it an assortment of penalties, including court costs and fines,
increased car insurance rates, legal fees and $2,000 in driver responsibilities fees.

Partiers need to have a plan; designate a sober driver, or simply call a cab to get you home safely.
