NOUN

NOUN
A noun is the name of a thing,
person, animal, place or idea.

 There are 5 types of nouns namely:


- Proper Noun
- Common / Concrete Noun
- Collective Noun
- Abstract Noun
- Compound Noun
PROPER NOUNS

 Isthe name of a particular person or


place.

 Allproper noun must begin with a capital


letter.
(i) Persons
- Ali, Noraini, Chong, Ramu

(ii) Places
- Penang, Kota Bharu, Tokyo

(iii) Animals
- Si Putih, Lassie, Blacky
COMMON/ CONCRETE
NOUNS
 Isthe general term used to refer to
persons, animals and things or objects.

 E.g:Man, cat, song, flower, ice-cream, wind,


sunlight.

 We can experience this group of nouns with


your 5 senses – see them, hear them, smell
them, taste them and feel them.
COLLECTIVE NOUNS
 Refers to a number or a set of persons,
things, or animals regarded as a single
group of the same kind, taken together as
a whole.

 Flock
of pigeons, a family, an army, an
assembly, a committee, gaggle.
ABSTRACT NOUNS
Are names of special qualities, actions,
emotions or conditions of a person or
persons.
You cannot detect this group of nouns
with your 5 senses.
Eg: wisdom, friendship, honesty,
goodness, happiness, anger.
COMPOUND NOUNS
Consist of 2 or more words put
together to form a name.
They can be written separately but
they mean 1 thing.
Eg: post office, living room, brother-
in-law, narrow-minded.
NOUN
Nouns can also divided to:
- Countable and Uncountable
- Gender
- Number (singular & plural)
- Case (subject, object,
possessive)
COUNTABLE NOUNS
Are the names of objects, people, etc.
that we can count

Eg: book, pen, apple, boy, sister,


doctor, horse.
UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS
Are the names of things which we
cannot count
Eg: milk, oil, sugar, gold, honesty.
 Countable nouns have plural forms
while uncountable nouns do not. Eg:
Books (√)

 4 types of gender nouns:
a. Masculine gender

b. Feminine gender

c. Common gender

d. Neuter gender

a. Masculine gender

o A nouns that denotes a male animal

o Eg: Boy, Lion, Hero, Cock, Bull,


Dog

b. Feminine gender

o A nouns that denotes a female animal

o Eg: Girl, Lioness, Heroine, Hen,


Cow, Bitch
GENDER (CONT…III)
c. Common gender

o A nouns that denotes either a male


or a female

o Eg: Parent, child, friend, pupil,


enemy, cousin, neighbour

d. Neuter gender

o A nouns that denotes neither male


nor female (thing without life)

o Eg: Pen, Book, Room, Tree

Ending with Adding Examples
-NULL- -s Boys, Pens, Trees
-s, -sh, -ch, -x -es Classes, Brushes, Branches, Boxes
-o -es Buffaloes, Potatoes, Mangoes
* -o -s Dynamos, Kilos, Logos, Photos
-y -es Baby-> Babies,
(preceded by a (change -y into -i) Lady-> Ladies,
consonant) Story-> Stories
-f, -fe -es Thief-> Thieves,
(change -f or -fe into -v) Knife-> Knives,
Self-> Selves
* -f, -fe * -s Chiefs, Safes, Proofs, Handkerchiefs

Change the inside vowel of the singular Men, Women, Feet, Teeth
** *-en Ox-> Oxen, Child-> Children
OTHER PLURAL FORMS
o Fish or fishes?
a. Fish – usual plural
b. Fishes – used to talk about different kinds of fish

o Some nouns have the singular and plural alike


Eg: Sheep, Deer, Salmon, Aircraft, Series, Species, Pair,
Dozen, Score, Gross, Hundred

o Some nouns are used only in the plural

a. Names of instruments which have 2 parts forming a kind of pair.


Eg: Scissors, Pincers, Spectacles

b. Name of certain articles of dress.


Eg: Trousers, Drawers, Jeans, Shorts, Pyjamas

c. Certain other nouns


Eg: Thanks, Proceeds, Assets

c. Name of some common diseases


Eg: Measles, Mumps, Rickets

d. Names of some games

o Nominative case
- When a noun (or pronoun) is used as the Subject of a verb

o Objective case (or Accusative)


- When a noun (or pronoun) is used as the Object of a verb

- Eg: John threw a stone

Case Example
A noun comes after preposition The book is on the desk.

Nominative comes before the The window was broken. (subject)

Accusative comes after the verb Ali broke the window. (object)

Direct Object Abu gave Ali a ball


Indirect Object Abu gave Ali a ball

Possessive Case Siti’s cat (singular)


Girls’ school (plural)
Men’s club (plural but doesn’t end with “s”)
