THE FOOD PYRAMID

What is the food pyramid?

The food pyramid is a graphic aid that was developed as a guide in making daily food
choices. It synthesizes the dietary guidelines and the old basic food guide. It suggests that
people eat a variety of foods to obtain the nutrients they need. It divides foods into five groups,
each rich in certain nutrients. The groups are assigned to blocks of different sizes; the foods
needed in the largest amounts appear in the largest block. Each block is assigned also with
ranges of recommended number of daily servings.

The pyramid is designed to help people reduce their intake of fat and concentrated
sugars. In the smallest box, at the top of the pyramid, are the fats, oils and sweet category; it is
labeled “use sparingly”.

The food guide is easy to follow and people who eat a variety of foods from each group
in the suggested amounts are likely to come close to recommended nutrient levels.
