Hydraulic System
Pneumatic System
Pneumatics
• A branch of
technology which deals
the study and
application of the use of
pressurized gas to affect
mechanical motion.
How Does a
Pneumatic
System
Works?
Pneumatics is a
method of
S – toring and
T –ransferring
of E –nergy to
P –erform work
using
compressed
air…
The
Pneumatic
System
Elements
Properties of
Compressed Air

Compressor
• A pump which
compresses air, raising
it to a higher pressure,
and delivers it to the
pneumatic system.

Check Valve
• A one-way valve that
allows pressurized air
to enter the pneumatic
system.

Accumulator
• Stores compressed air,
preventing surges in
pressure and relieving
the duty cycle of the
compressor.
Directional Valve
• Controls the flow of
pressurized air from the
source to the selected
port.

Actuator
• Converts energy stored
in the compressed air
into mechanical motion.

Pneumatic filter
• A device which
removes contaminants
from a compressed air
stream.
Pneumatic
Lubricator
• A device that injects
an aerosolized stream
of oil into the airline.

Environment
• Environmentally
clean.

Advantages:
• High
Efficiency
• High
reliability
• Intrinsically
safe
• Maintenance
easy
Disadvantages:
Preparation,

Speed and
Force
Requirement
• Slower than
hydraulics
• Cost
• Noise
Dangers in a
pneumatic
system can
come from:
• Poorly
maintained
compressor with a
faulty relief
valve.
• Devices operated
at excessive
pressures which
may cause them
to explode.
• High pressure
systems with bad
connections or
fittings, which
could allow a hose
to spring loose,
jump around or
hit a nearby
person.
• Electrically
related heat from
power cables or
from too little air
circulating around
the compressor.
Safety:
• Never use your
fingers to detect if
there’s a
compressed air.
• When connecting
pneumatic circuits,
make sure that all
connections are
secured before
finally connecting
the circuit to the
compressed air
supply.
• Always use the
right voltage.
• Don’t over power
pneumatic devices.
• Protect your
equipment and
your patrons.
