THESE ARE ³IN-OUT´ TYPE CLUTCHES BY MEANS OF WHICH THE DRIVING SHFT COULD BE COUPLED IN OR OUT WITH THE DRIVEN SHAFT AT WILL. THESE CLUTCHES ARE ALSO KNOWN AS DOG CLUTCHES AND ARE WIDELY EMPLOYED IN GEARBOXES TO ENGAGE ONE GEAR WITH THE OTHER FITTED ON THE SHAFTS HAVING SAME AXIS. THESE TYPE OS CLUTCH USES TWO MEMBERS HAVING DOGS OR NOTCHES AT THEIR FACINGS.

ONE MEMBER IS FIXED WITH THE DRIVING SHAFT AND THE OTHER MEMBER IS PROVIDED ON THE DRIVEN SPLINED SHAFT. THE DRIVEN MEMBER IS MOVED TO AND FRO ON THE DRIVEN SHAFT BY MEANS OF A SUITABLE LEVER. IN ANOTHER TYPE THE DRIVEN MEMBER CONTAINS TEETH AROUND IT. A SLEEVE HAVING TEETH AT ITS INSIDE , IS MOVED OVER THE DRIVEN MEMBER TO COUPLE WITH IT. THIS TYPE OF ARNG IS APPLICABLE INSYNCHROMESH GEARBOXES.

DRAWBACKS OF POSITIVE CLUTCHES

THE DRIVING AND THE DRIVEN MEMBER MUST ROTATE AT THE SAME SPEEDS BEFORE ENGAGEMENT IS ATTEMPTED. IF THE SPEEDS ARE NOT MATCHED THEN THE ENGAGEMENT IS NOISY AND OFTEN CAUSES DAMAGE TO THE CLUTCH TEETH.

GRADUAL ENGAGEMENT CLUTCHES THESE TYPE OF CLUTCHES ENABLE THE DRIVEN MEMBER TO BE DISENGAGED AND ENGAGED GRADUALLY WITH THE DRIVEN MEMBER. THESE TYPE OF CLUTCHES MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR ONE SHAFT TO ROTATE AT A HIGHER SPEED WHILE THE DRIVEN SHAFT IS EITHER STATIONARY OR ROTATING AT A SLOWER SPEED.
