Disaster

After a day playing in the sea and tomb stoning we headed to Plaka - 5
hours helming in 40 degrees. Where we rafted up outside 5 other boats.

Rafting, where you tie up alongside one or more boats connected to a

harbour wall, requires 6 ropes. 2 tie you to the boat alongside, 2
stop you sliding back and forth and 2 tie you to land.

Anyway, Plaka is a lovely little Greek village in the Peleponese and

we had a nice meal with some local wine and the skippers headed for
bed. That didn’t last, yet again some of the crews kept the village
awake (one of the big issues this week).

Today we’re in Hydra for the afternoon. To leave a raft, you remove
four of your ropes and use your engine and two ropes to swing the
stern out. It was at this point we realised we had been the only boat
to bother with shore lines. The raft shifted 10 foot forwards, but
some one was moored 9’10” in front. Result: damage to some wood and
90
mins in custody. Luckilly the port police blamed the skippers inside
me for not tying up properly, all of whom had buggered off.

So I’ve escaped the crew (the weeks second big issue) and am enjoying
souvlaki and beer in Hydra (which is a fantastic little place,
boutique shops, artists studios, cafes etc.). Don’t get me wrong the
crew are all nice people, but they are here to party not sail. They
get up, sunbathe, sleep, complain I’d asked them to help and then play
music until 4ish in the morning. This leaves me sailing single handed
for many hours per day - exhaustion beckons.

Last day tomorrow. Looking forward to a proper, cold climate again.
