Parts of Speech

Stuff you should have learned in


6th grade but probably forgot 
Noun
Person, Place, Thing

Example: Maria, China, Cat


Article
Introduces, limits, or clarifies noun

Example: The, A, An
Pronoun
Takes the place of a noun

Example: I, He, She, It, They,


We, You
Verb
Action word. Many tenses possible.

Example: Go, Jump, Call, Be,


Run
Adjective
Describes a NOUN

Example: Red, Big, Smart, Tall


Possessive Adjective
Describes who owns the noun

Example: My, Your, His, Her,


Their
Adverb
Describes a VERB

Example: Swiftly, Well, Loudly


Preposition
Relates object to rest of sentence

Example: Over, Through,


During, On, Beside, Against
Subject
Does the action in a sentence

“Marie walked through the door”


Object
Receives the action in a sentence

“Marie walked through the door.”


DON’T mix these up ever
again!!!
 There: location (over there)
 Their: possessive adj (It’s their problem.)
 They’re: contraction (they are)

 To: Preposition (I’m going to the store)


 Too: It’s too much money –and- “also” (I speak Spanish,
and I speak Russian too.)
