A Message from the Manager 3

Welcome to our 2011 Fall/Winter Recreation Guide full of many recreational opportunities for you to enjoy. The current

FA L L / W I N T E R 2010
economic situation and its impact on everyone has required this department to look at how we can sustain the programs and
facilities that add quality to your life in Murrieta. We have added different and new classes, which many of you have participated
in and are enjoying. We continue to offer you a wide variety of classes and programs for all ages. Take advantage of our on-line
registration. It is so simple and quick!
With winter approaching, we want to encourage everyone to continue exercising and eating healthy. Visit our Healthy Murrieta
website at www.healthymurrieta.com and get great recipes and new ideas on exercising to a healthier Life!! Remember our
goal is to exercise to the moon and back. Help us achieve our goal!
We encourage everyone to stop by Town Square Park and visit our Veterans Memorial that was dedicated this past Memorial
Day. You start with the 22-foot obelisk representing the five branches of the military with the American flag
draped over the top. Then you can hold your breath when looking at the pictures etched in the World War
II Memorial Wall. For more information on how to donate to the remaining six walls, please read below.
Remember to help us celebrate our military past and present at our 8th Annual Veteran’s Day Parade
on Thursday, November 11th.
We want you to have some fun and enjoyment so mark your calendars for our Fall Spooktacular, the
Push Cart Parade, Santa’s Visits, and much more during the month of December that is full of Holiday
Magic!!! For more information, you can go to the city’s website at www.murrieta.org or give us a call
at 304-PARK (7275). We invite you to come PLAY with us!
Sincerely,
Debbie Tharp
Community Services Manager

The City of Murrieta’s Town Square Park (located behind the Police Station at 24701 Jefferson Avenue) is home
to a unique memorial. A tall, granite obelisk with an inlaid granite american flag set in a base honoring the five
levels of service (Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, and Air Force) stands proudly above a series of walls depicting
dramatic and emotional imagery of our men and women who have served and sacrificed in our nation’s defense.
The memorial consists of seven granite monuments in a chronological timeline representing the various conflicts
involving the United States with artist renderings of those wars and conflicts. Phase 1, consisting of the obelisk
and the World War II Memorial Wall, is now complete.

The concept for this monument is predicated on the fact that

in each conflict, lives and countries were pulled into, abruptly
interrupted by, and intertwined with moments of intense
passion and conflict, commitment and escape, euphoria and desperation. A meandering decomposed
granite path is designed to be at the base of the memorial walls, winding through the existing “V”
pattern of the Town Square Park to represent those feelings and commitments. CIT Y OF MURRIE TA RECRE AT ION GUIDE

Each wall can be viewed from both pathways,

but is also set to interrupt the decomposed
granite path that links the monument walls. It is
this interruption that symbolizes those struggles
and abrupt interruption of life. The heights and
shapes represented in the inclined and buried
portions of the walls symbolize the moments of
rise and fall in events that occurred during these
conflicts.

Field of Honor Returns

Second Annual Field of Honor to Fly November 7 - 13 at Town Square Park
Don’t miss the spectacular display of 2,000 American flags flying at Town Square
Park from November 7-13. These flags honor veterans, including active-duty
military personnel, police, firefighters and other first responders who protect our
freedom and security. You also can honor your loved ones or other heroes by sponsoring a flag that will be yours to keep
after the event. Attached to the flag will be a yellow ribbon with the name of your hero.
Flag sponsorship forms and additional information can be found at
www.murrietarotary.org. During the week the flags are flying, there
CIT Y OF MURRIE TA RECRE AT ION GUIDE
will be several events, including opening ceremonies and a concert
honoring emergency first responders on November 7. On November
10, there will be a celebration of the Marine Corps’ 235th birthday
and on Veteran’s Day, November 11, be sure to come out for the
annual parade that will end among the flags at Town Square Park.
For latest plans about programs throughout the week, check the
club’s website at www.murrietarotary.org.
This event is a partnership of the Rotary Club of Murrieta and the City of Murrieta. Net proceeds from the Field of Honor

projects of the Rotary Club of Murrieta.
