Alappuzha, also known as the Venice of the East, is a backwater tourism destination in Kerala known for its network of canals. It is one of the few places in the world where farming occurs below sea level. The canals and backwaters make Alappuzha a favorite spot for migratory birds. The town is also known for the black granite idol of Lord Buddha in Kuttanad that dates back to the 9th or 10th century. Famous boat races take place in August and January each year, and the boats used are smeared with oil to glide through the water.
