8/31 – Lesson 6: Rules for Addition, Other

Stuff
Ex. 1
Add: ( +1 ) +( +3 )=(+ 4)
Ex. 2
Add: (−1 ) +(−3 ) =(−4)
To add two signed numbers that have the
same sign, add their absolute values, and
give the result the same sign as the
numbers.
Ex. 3
Add: (−2 ) +( +5 ) =(+3)
Ex. 4
Add: ( +2 ) +(−5 ) =(−3)
To add two numbers with different signs,
subtract their absolute values, and give the
result the sign of the number with the larger
absolute value.
Ex. 5
Add:
a) ( +7 ) +(−3 )=(+ 4)
b) (−7 )+(−3 )=(−10)
c) (−7 )+( +3 )=(−4)
d) (−4 ) +(−1 )=(−5)
e) ( +2 ) +( +6 )=(+ 8)
f) (−2 ) +(−8 )=(−10)
g) (−2 ) +( +8 )=(+ 6)
h) ( +2 ) +(−8 )=(−6)
