CE 321: STEEL DESIGN

SEMESTER I: 2010

Homework #4 ECCENTRIC BOLTED CONNECTIONS

Due August 27, 2010
Use E250 steel (fy=250 MPa and fu=410 MPa)

Prob.#1
What size bolts (class 8.8, threads in shear plane,
slip is permitted) are required for the bracket
connection shown in figure, considering the 500 kN
following analysis options:
40
a) Neutral axis lies at the centroid of the 60
fasteners group and the joint strength is ISHT 100 60
60
limited by failure of the most heavily 60
stressed fastener. 40
b) The joint strength corresponds to all ISHB 400@82.2 150
bolts in tension reaching their ultimate 120
40 40
strength and a portion of T-flange
reaching limit state of failure in bearing.

Prob.#2 70 300
For the slip-critical bracket connection shown in
P P
figure containing M20 [class 8.8] bolts, determine
the service load capacity P due to dead and live 50
loads. 75

250
10 mm Plate

ISHB 450@92.5

Prob.#3
An ISHB 300 @58.8 kg/m column supports a concentric axial load of 100 kN and a moment of 75 kN m
in the plane of the web. Design a base plate and its connection to the column shaft. Also design the
anchor bolts, if required.
