Objectives
As student nurses, the main objectives for in completing this case
study are the following: 
 To be able to develop effective therapeutic communication skills.

 To be able to build a trusting relationship in order to effectively


deliver the utmost care to the patient.
 To be able to assess the physical, emotional, and psychological
aspects of the patient.
 To be able to work out the learned knowledge in physical
assessment.
 To increase awareness of the significance of health specifically to
the disease that requires great attention and interventions.

Diagnostic and Laboratory Procedures

 Hematology - is a screening test, used to diagnose


and manage numerous diseases. It can reflect
problems with fluid volume (such as dehydration)
or loss of blood. It can show abnormalities in the
production, life span, and destruction of blood
cells. It can reflect acute or chronic infection,
allergies, and problems with clotting.
 Chest X-Ray - is performed to evaluate the lungs,
heart and chest wall.
Anatomy and Physiology
The Respiratory System
 consists of the external nose, the nasal cavity, the
pharynx, the larynx, the trachea, the bronchi and
lungs. Although air frequently passes through the
oral cavity, it is considered to be part of the
digestive system instead of the respiratory system.

Surgical Management
 Chest Thoracostomy Tube - is a flexible plastic
tube that is inserted through the side of the chest
into the pleural space. It is used to remove air
(pneumothorax) or fluid (pleural effusion, blood,
chyle), or pus (empyema) from the intrathoracic
space. It is also known as a Bülau drain or an
intercostal catheter.
