ART

Review #2

This is a collection from the Rubell Family Collection, the artist name is Nina Chanel

Abney and the title is Class of 2007. This piece of art is acrylic on canvas. The piece portrays

eighteen inmates dressed in prison attire with handcuffs and chains. Their clothing is orange and

they are being guarded by a white officer. The painter depicts several races however they are all

covered in dark paint except the white woman. The paint has the effect that it is still wet and

running. The art seems smooth and in contrast with the story behind it.

This piece is very detailed even down to the jewelry the artist included. The officer is white

with blond hair and blue eyes, I think the artist wants to give us the idea of the white person being

superior to all these other races . The piece also seems very shallow and to the front. There is not definite

depth shown all the images are situated at the front of the canvas. The focus of this piece is centered and

the colors used indicate mixed feeling. There is some type of intimacy portrayed also in that each

male character has his hand around the female. The hands of the people in this piece all seem

so different. The brighter colors were only used on the white lady which gives her a sense of

superiority. Overall the piece is contemporary art.

In a sense I feel that the artist is trying to say that this is what our future will look like,

with all the changes in lifestyles of the upcoming generation. The colors used indicate a mild

feeling, the orange and brown are the main colors. There are hints of green, yellow and blue.

Overall this piece seems very prejudice.
