FORMULA SAE

RULES CHANGES FOR 2008

For the benefit of the teams, below is a summary of the major rules changes for the 2008
Formula SAE competitions. It is not a complete list. If there are any differences between this
summary and the official rules, the Rules will prevail. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the
competitors to read the Rules thoroughly.

1.2 Vehicle Design Objectives Car should be designed for people from 5th %
female to 95th % male.
2.2.5 Photo Requirements Must provide photos of this year’s car versus last year’s.
3.1.4 Visible Access Must provide visible access for all items on Tech Form
3.2.2 Ground Clearance Minimum static ground clearance of 1 inch required.
3.3.3.1 Baseline Steel Material Shoulder harness bar must be 1.00“ OD x 0.095” wall.
3.3.5.1 Main Hoop Bracing No bracing loads through engine or transmission.
Anything on braces outside Primary Structure needs
extra bracing.
3.3.6.3 Impact Attenuator Length increased to 200 mm (was 150 mm).
Anti-penetration requirements strengthened.
3.4.9.2 Cockpit Master Switch Twist or Twist & Pull “On” OK.
3.5.1.5 System Sealing-Catch Cans Material & location requirements added.
3.5.2 Fuels Unleaded 93 (R+M)/2 or 98 RON specified as the
“standard” gasoline for the Series.
3.5.4.2 Throttle Actuation Two (2) return springs required at the throttle body.
4.2.2 Visual Access Required for all items on Tech Form
5.10.8 Pit Carts No self propelled carts.
6 Possible Rules Changes In 3.3.6.4, IA Data – peak decel. 40g maximum.
for 2009. Minimum cockpit opening dimensions to be added.
