I don't think the public will understand this To them, he is obviously a senior official if he appears alongside Jack
Straw and will give the BBC a chance to fire back. So I have urged Alastalr to take it out of the statement .

I suspect the most damning point for the BBC and the most damaging to their credibility is he is nothing to do with the
intelligence services which the public will belelve is what the BBC said he was - even if most of the time they didn't

Jonathan,

In my draft letter which AC says you now have for your letter to the BBC, I said Mr Kelly was not a senior
official This may be factually true in civil service terms, but, in reality, the fact that he gave evidence with the
Foreign Secretary to a select committee makes him senior whatever his grade is.
