Hybrid Cars

Fuel Efficient System

Prashob.P
Roll No:98260
Overview
Conventional mileage- 8.55 litres per
100 km.
Hybrid mileage- 3.92 litres per 100 km.
Green House Effect- lesser emission of
CO2 & CO.
 Adherence to Emission Standards &
CAFÉ..
What makes it a Hybrid?
Combines two or more sources of power
directly or indirectly to provide propulsion.
Examples
a)Mo- ped.
b)Trains.
c)Submarines.
Hybrid Structure
Parallel Hybrid
Series Hybrid
Hybrid Components
Gasoline Engine
Fuel Tank
Electric Motor
Generator
Batteries
Transmission
Parts of an Engine

Cylinders
Types are Inline,V&Flat
Inline Cylinder
V-Cylinder Flat Cylinder
Spark plug
Valves
Piston
Piston rings
a)Prevent leaking of fuel/air mixture in to
sump during combustion.
b)Keep oil in the sump from being lost.
Combustion Chamber
a) Area where compression combustion
takes place.
b) Displacement
c)More displacement by increasing no: of
cylinder or size of cylinder.
Connecting rod

Crank shaft

Sump
Parts of an Electric Motor
Evolution of the Hybrid
Problem with Gas & Electric powered cars.
a)Pollution
b)Poor mileage
c)Slow speed
d)Inconvenient to recharge.
Smaller Engines are more
efficient
Heavier engine requires extra energy to
accelerate.
Heavier Pistons requires comparatively
large energy.
Displacement of cylinders is large so extra
fuel consumption.
Hybrid Performance
Smaller gasoline engine than other
conventional car engines.
Powerful engine.
Cars like Chevy Camaro with its big V-8
engine is less efficient.
Hybrid Efficiency
Recover energy and store it in the battery.
Uses regenerative braking.
Sometimes shut off the engine.
Use advanced aerodynamics to reduce drag
like reducing frontal area of a car, covering
of wheel housings,replacing of mirrors
with small cameras.
Use low-rolling resistance tires.
Hybrid cars use special tires that are both
stiffer and inflated to a higher pressure.
Use lightweight materials like carbon fiber
or lightweight metals like Aluminum and
Magnesium to increase mileage.
What’s Available Now?
 Honda Insight

 Toyota Prius

 Mazda d80(using stirling engine)

Hybrid Mileage Tips
Drive Slower

Maintain a constant speed.

Avoid abrupt stops.

Conclusion
Using concept of Hybridization of cars
results in better efficiency and also saves a
lot of fuel in today’s fuel deficit world.
