1. Complete Sentence
> What is complete sentence?
 Complete Sentence is the sentence that is:
• meaningful
• has subject and verb
• Examples:
• I am presenting right now.
• I study at Western University.
• I am a student.
2. Sentence Fragment
> What is sentence fragment?
 Sentence Fragment is the sentence that:
• is meaningless
• has no subject
• has no verb
• Examples:
• He teaches smoothly.
• Such as electrical, chemical, and industrial engineering.
• The man in the house across the street.
2.1. Phrase
 Phrase is a group of words that:
 has no subject and verb
 So phrase is Fragments when it stays alone.
• Examples:
• Near the closet.
• In the club.
• At Western University.
• On the bed.
• At 3am.

2.2. Dependant Clause


 Dependant Clause is the clause that:
 Cannot stay alone.
 Meaningless
 Use Subordinating Conjunction
 So Dependant Clause is Fragment when it stays.
Subordinating Conjunction
 Cause: because, in that, since
 Condition: if, although, unless
 Manner: as, as though, as if
 Result: in order that, so that
 Time: after, before, since, until, when, whenever, while
• Examples:
• Because I am stupid.
• When I was young.
• After I read a book about Khmer.
• Although I am happy.
2.3. How to Correct Sentence Fragment
1. By adding information.
 Incorrect: At Western University.
 Correct: I study at Western University.
 Incorrect: While I was listening to radio.
 Correct: While I was listening to radio, my phone rang.
2. By joining sentence using FANBOY, Subordinating Conjunction,
Semi Colon (;), or delete full stop.
 Incorrect: He likes playing soccer. Playing game.
 Correct: He likes playing soccer and playing game.
 Incorrect: His phone rang. While he was sleeping.
 Correct: His phone rang while he was sleeping.
3. By deleting subordinating conjunction.
 Incorrect: Although grammar is important for effective
writing.
 Correct: Grammar is important for effective writing.
 Incorrect: After I read a book about Khmer History
yesterday.
 Correct: I read a book about Khmer History yesterday.

3. Choppy Sentences
> What is choppy sentences?
 Choppy Sentences is the sentence that is:
• use too many simple sentences
• use the same pronoun many time
• Examples:
• Lana is good at singing. She has a beautiful voice. She was born in
Phnom Penh. She is my favorite star. She likes to sing since she
was a child.
• Wayne Rooney is my favorite football star. He was born in
Liverpool, England. He is Man Utd member. He is one of the most
powerful strikers in the world. He is good at striking on goal. He is
Man Utd’s hero.
How to Correct Choppy Sentences
• By joining the choppy sentences with:
- FANBOYS
- Subordinating conjunction
- Semicolon (;)
- Relative pronoun
- Adding some information
 Incorrect: Lana is good at singing. She has a beautiful voice. She
was born in Phnom Penh. She is my favorite star. She likes to sing
since she was a child.
 Correct: Lana is good at singing, and she has a beautiful voice. She
is my favorite star who was born in Phnom Penh, and she likes to
sing since she was a child.
 Incorrect: Wayne Rooney is my favorite football star. He was born
in Liverpool, England. He is Man Utd member. He is one of the
most powerful strikers in the world. He is good at striking on goal.
He is Man Utd’s hero.
 Correct: Wayne Rooney is my favorite football star who was born
in Liverpool, England, and he is Man Utd member who is one of
the most powerful strikers in the world. Also, He is good at
striking on goal so that why He is Man Utd’s hero.
