Library privatization petition – A Non-binding Petition

SAY NO!
to PRIVATIZING the STOCKTON/SANJOAQUIN COUNTY LIBRARY

The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors and the Stockton City Council are in the process of
deciding whether to outsource all library management and operations to a private company.

The privatization of the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library is wrong for our
community. Ceding operational control of the library to a for-profit vendor would:

• Undermine the fundamental purpose of a library, which is to serve as a knowledge

resource for all community members
• Shift library priorities to serving the bottom line of a private company rather than
providing valuable services to the public
• Likely lower the quality of library staff
• Offer no guarantee to provide sufficient library services at a lower cost to the county
• Send taxpayer dollars into the private coffers of a for-profit company
• Eliminate local control over resources, materials, and events that should be tailored to
serve community needs

We urge you to be vocal about your opposition to library privatization. The Board is likely to act
quickly on this issue, and we need to let them know as soon as possible that privatizing the
public library is unacceptable to our community.

• Contact your Supervisor by mail, email, or phone to express your concerns;

• Attending meetings of the Board and speaking out against the proposal during the public
comment period before the meeting;
• Write a letter to the editor of your local daily and/or weekly paper
• Go to http://cccos.org/petition.html to sign the petition against privatizing the Library
