President’s Message
The Prosperity Initiative is Underway

Through 2009 and into early 2010, the funding campaign for the Joplin Regional Prosperity Initiative took place.
That campaign was fund a newly created “umbrella” of economic development actions, including: 1) assisting
entrepreneurs and small businesses, 2) enhancing the overall workforce skills with emphasis on increasing high
school graduation rates and new training opportunities for existing workers, 3) providing assistance to existing
larger firms and 4) strengthening efforts to attract new firms to the region to broaden the economic base. In March,
with the campaign ended, the JRPI efforts began in earnest and, six months in, are already showing results.

Coming up is the JRPI half-day program on basis and trends in economic development. The program is built to
give community leaders, elected or volunteer, and any interested person the opportunity to learn about how to Rob O’Brian
prepare their community for economic development, what resources are available to assist companies and who President
the real competition is for new jobs and investment. The September 9th event will be keynoted by one of the top
ten site consultants in the country, Dennis Donovan of the WDG Consulting Group. The program is open to any
Chamber member. For more information contact Sherri Cloyd.

While that is the most immediate item coming up, there is a lot going on behind the scenes.
During the campaign, it was promised there would be a Governance Board to oversee the activities and use of funds. That Board is formed
and by-laws are complete. The Board is led by Chairman Bill Gipson of Empire District Electric and Vice-chairman Patrick O’Bryan, Mayor
of Pittsburg, KS.

With a focus on existing firms, your Chamber and the Southwest Missouri Workforce Investment Board reached agreement to bring Gary Box
to the chamber to focus on business retention in the five county JRPI area. He is well underway on existing firm surveys (100 year per plan)
and following up with one on one visits with participating firms and local developers.
Also with existing firms, we have been identifying companies already in or interested in the wind energy supplier market. We developed a
“regional suppliers” document for the wind power show in Dallas. Those companies have identified another wind show in December for
participation. To learn more about the wind power supply chain group, contact me.

For entrepreneurs and small firms the “JoplinRegionalBizCenter.com” has been updated with new, on-line content plus the “Five Star” report.
The Five Star report can be requested specific to your business location. This report can be done on either a radius or drive-time from your
location and includes demographics, consumer purchases, labor market dynamics and more. To get a report, go on-line and make the request
on the “Five Star Report” button.

Ask the Executive Coach...
by Daniel P. Chiodo, CMEC | Impact Training & Development

QUESTION:
Why do I always get excited in the fall and think about going back to school, even though I am not in school anymore?

ANSWER:
I know exactly what you mean. Just the other day I noticed that it was just a little bit cooler during my morning run. My
running partner even told me I was running a little faster than normal. I think it was that inspiring fall air. Later, as I walked
outside and took a deep breath of the morning air before heading off to work- I felt just what you’re talking about. It’s that
“time to go back to school” feeling. It returns every year.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

I think many of us have those same thoughts. Part of it could be the excitement you always felt each year when you returned
to school. You thought about the new people you’d be meeting, the new teachers who might become an important figure in
your life, and maybe even some behaviors that you vowed to change for the new school year. But more than that, it is like a new beginning. It’s
the same feeling you get when it is time for a new season. Some people love living in parts of the country where there are four distinct seasons.
They will comment when they can feel the new season about to occur. It excites them.

LOOK AT EACH SEASON AS A CHANCE TO START ANEW

I think this is also a great way to look at life. There are so many things to experience. Meanwhile you want to do your very best at whatever you
do to achieve as much as possible. And let’s face it, sometimes you need some motivation. Think about your year in terms of quarters. Each
quarter is a new season and a time when you can determine whether you are meeting your goals or not. And if you’re not, get excited about
working a little harder and smarter to get to where you want to be.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

If you are a person who only examines your life once a year when you make New Year’s resolutions, you might consider looking at these
resolutions the same way you do the seasons. How are you progressing? Are you achieving what you want? Then, approach the beginning of
each season with real gusto. Move the needle in your life so that you make a real difference.

A SEASONAL APPROACH TO ACCOMPLISHING YOUR GOALS

At the beginning of each season, ask yourself these questions:

1. What specific goals did I set for myself this year?

2. Did I prioritize them to do the toughest first?

3. Do I have real strategies to accomplish each one?

4. How many things have I checked off the list? Do I have 25% of the items checked off after March, about 50% after June, 75% checked off the
list as of September and almost 100% checked off by the end of December?

MOVING THE NEEDLE

Why do I ask you the four questions above? They are the same things that I would be asking my clients in the Executive Coaching Experience.
If you want to “move the needle,” that is, accomplish things that will get you closer to the wealth and happiness you deserve, you have to hold
yourself accountable.
