POWER AND CONTROL CABLES

 ALUMINIUM CONDUCTOR XLPE ( CROSS LINKED POLY


EHELENE) INSULATED ARMOURED CABLES ARE USED FOR
MAIN POWER SUPPLY FROM LT TRANSFORMER TO
CONTROL ROOM, BETWEEN DISTRIBUTION BOARDS ( MCC
ROOM TO FIREFIGHTING MCC AND MCC ROOM TO AC
MCC), SUPPLY TO COLONY AND FROM DG SET TO
CONTROL ROOM.
 ALUMINIUM CONDUCTOR PVC INSULATED ARMOURED
WILL BE USED FOR VARIOUS APPLICATIONS IN
SWITCHYARD AND CONTROL ROOM AREAS.
 FOR CONTROL/PROTECTION/INSTRUMENTATION PURPOSE
PVC INSULATED ARMOURED CABLES OF MINIMUM 2.5
SQMMSIZE WITH STRANDED COPPER CONDUCTOR ARE
USED.
POWER AND CONTROL CABLES

 SEPARATE CABLES WILL BE USED FOR AC AND DC

 SEPARATE CABLES FOR DC1 & DC2

 SEPARATE CABLES FOR DIFFERENT CORES OF CT & CVT

 ATLEAST ONE CORE SHALL BE KEPT AS SPARE IN COPPER


CONTROL CABLES OF 4C,5C & 7C SIZES AND TWO CORES
SHALL BE KEPT AS SPARE IN 10C OR HEIGHER SIZES.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CABLES

 THE CABLES SHALL BE SUITABLE FOR LAYING IN


RACKS,DUCTS,TRENCHES,CONDUITS AND UNDER
GROUND BURIED INSTALLATION WITH UNCONTROLLED
BACK FILLING AND CHANCES OF FLOODING BY WATER.
 CABLES SHALL BE DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND ALL
MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL AND THERMAL STRESSES
UNDER STEADY STATE AND TRANSIENT OPERATION
CONDITION. THE XLPE/PVC POWER CABLES OF SIZES
240SQMM AND ABOVE SHALL BE WITHSTAND WITHOUT
DAMAGE A 3 PH FAULT CURRENT OF AT LEAST 45KA FOR
AT LEAST 0.12SEC. THE ARMOUR FOR THESE CABLES
SHALL BE CAPABLE OF CARRYING 45KA FOR .12 SEC
WITHOUT EXCEEDING THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE TEMP.
OF PVC OUTER SHEATH.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CABLES

 THE XLPE INSULATED CABLES SHALL BE CAPABLE OF WITHSTANDING A


CONDUCTOR TEMPERATURE OF 2500 C DURING A SHORT CIRCUIT
WITHOUT ANY DAMAGE. THE PVC INSULATED CABLES SHALL BE CAPABLE
OF WITHSTANDING A CONDUCTOR TEMPERATURE OF 160 DEG. C DURING
A SHORT CIRCUIT.
 THE ALUMINIUM/COPPER WIRES USED FOR MANUFACTURING THE CABLES
SHALL BE TRUE CIRCULAR IN SHAPE BEFORE STRANDING AND SHALL BE
UNIFORMLY GOOD QUALITY, FREE FROM DEFECTS.
 PROGRESSIVE SEQUENTIAL MARKING OF THE LENGTH OF CABLE IN
METERS AT EVERY ONE METER SHALL BE PROVIDED ON THE OUTER
SHEATH OF THE CABLE.
 THE CABLE SHALL HAVE OUTER SHEATH OF A MATERIAL WITH AN OXYGEN
INDEX OF NOT LESS THAN 29 AND A TEMPERATURE INDEX OF NOT LESS
THAN 250 DEG. C
 ALLOWABLE TOLERANCE ON THE OVER DIA. OF THE CABLES SHALL BE +/-
2MM.
CABLE TAGS AND MARKERS

 EACH CABLE AND CONDUIT RUN SHALL BE TAGGED WITH


NUMBERS THAT APPEAR IN THE CABLE AND CONDUIT
SCHEDULE.
 THE TAG SHALL BE ALUMINIUM WITH THE NUMBER
PUNCHED ON IT AND SECURELY ATTACHED TO THE CABLE
CONDUIT BY NOT LESS THAN TWO TURNS OF 20 SWG GI
WIRE . CABLE TAGS SHALL BE RECTANGULAR IN SHAPE
FOR POWER CABLES AND OF CIRCULAR SHAPE FOR
CONTROL CABLES
 LOCATION OF CABLES LAID DIRECTLY UNDERGROUND
SHALL BE CLEARLY INDICATED WITH CABLE MARKER
MADE OF GALVANISED IRON PLATE.
 LOCATION OF UNDERGROUND CABLE JOINTS SHALL BE
INDICATED WITH CABLE MARKER WITH AN ADDITIONAL
INSCRIPTION “ CABLE JOINT”
CABLE TAGS AND MARKERS

 THE MARKER SHALL PROJECT 150MM ABOVE GROUND AND


SHALL BE SPACED AT AN INTERVAL OF 30 METERS AND AT
EVERY CHANGE IN DIRECTION. THEY SHALL BE LOCATED
ON BOTH SIDES OFROAD AND DRAIN CROSSINGS
 CABLE TAGS SHALL BE PROVIDED ON ALL CABLES AT
EACH END, ON BOTH SIDES OF WALL OR FLOOR
CROSSING, ON ECH DUCT/CONDUIT ENTRY AND AT EACH
END & TURNING POINT IN CABLE TRAY/ TRENCH RUNS.
CABLE TAGS SHALL BE PROVIDED INSIDE THE
SWITCHGEAR, MOTOR CONTROL CENTRES, CONTROL AND
RELAY PANELS ETC. WHEREVER REQUIRED FOR CABLE
IDENTIFICATION, WHERE A NUMBER OF CABLES ENTER
THROUGH A GLAND PLATE.
INSTALLATION OF CABLES

 CABLING IN CONTROL ROOM SHALL BE DONE ON LADDER


TYPECABLE TRAYS WHILE CABLING IN SWITCHYARD AREA
SHALL BE DONE ON ANGLES IN TRENCH
 ALL CABLES FROM CABLE TRENCH TO EQUIPMENTS
INCLUDING ALL INTERPOLE CABLE ( BOTH POWER AND
CONTROL) FOR ALL EQUIPMENT, SHALL BE LAID IN PVC
PIPES OF MINIMUM 50MM DIA., WHICH SHALL BE BURIED
IN GROUND AT A DEPTH OF 250MM BELOW FINISHED
FORMATION LEVEL. SEPARATE PVC PIPES SHALL BE LAID
FOR CONTROL AND POWER CABLES
 POWER AND CONTROL CABLES IN THE CABLE TRENCH
SHALL BE LAID IN SEPARATE TIERS.POWERCABLES ON
TOP TIRES AND CONTROL & OTHER SERVICE CABLES IN
BOTTOM TIERS.
INSTALLATION OF CABLES

 CABLE SHALL NOT BE BENT BELOW THE MINIMUM


PERMISSIBLE LIMIT. POWER CABLE 12D, CONTROL CABLE
10 D. D IS THE OVERALL DIAMETER OF CABLE.
 IN EACH CABLE RUN SOME EXTRA LENGTH SHALL BE KEPT
AT A SUITABLE POINT TO ENABLE ONE ( FOR LT
CABLES)/TWO (FOR HT CABLES) STRAIGHT THROUGH
JOINTS TO BE MADE IN CASE THE CABLE DEVELOP FAULT
AT A LATER DATE.
 CONTROL CABLE TERMINATION INSIDE THE EQUIPMENT
ENCLOSURES SHALL HAVE SUFFICIENT LENGTHS SO THAT
CHANGING OF TERMINATION IN TERMINAL BLOCKS CAN
BE DONE WITHOUT REQUIRING ANY SPLICING.
