Solving Quadratic Equations Graphically:

Example:

x2 +4x-77=0

Procedure:

1. Take the constant term (77) to RHS of equation i.e.

x2 +4x=77
2. Add a number to make RHS of equation a perfect square so that a square paper can be
cut. Let’s add 4 on both sides of equation so that RHS becomes 77+4 i.e. 81 (square of 9)
x2 +4x+4=77+4
x2 +4x+4=81
3. Now convert all terms into two dimensional figures so that papers can be cut to solve
the equation graphically

x * x +4*x+2*2=9*9

or x * x +2*x+2*x+2*2=9*9

or {square paper of size x * x} and {rectangular paper of size 2 * x} and one more
{rectangular paper of size 2 * x} and {square paper of size 2 * 2}={square paper of size 9
*9}

4. Cut a square of 9cm X 9cm

5. Now remove a square of 2cm X 2cm from one of the corner of square 9cm X 9cm square
6. Now remove two rectangles having one side 2 cm and other side unknown such that
leftover paper become a perfect square
7. Measure the side of leftover square
8. Side is 7cm
9. Hence solution to quadratic equation is 7
