HAILE RIVERA SUPPORTS SENATOR DIAZ’S CALL TO HAVE HISPANIC FILL SENATOR ESPADA’S
LEADERSHIP ROLES AND URGES SENATE LEADERS TO CONSIDER DIAZ FOR POSTS

Bronx, New York --- Northwest Bronx resident, community activist and early supporter of President
Obama’s campaign, Haile Rivera is supporting New York State Senator Ruben Diaz’s call to make
sure that a Hispanic is selected for the influential posts that are currently held by State Senator and
Majority Leader Pedro Espada, Jr. At the same time, Rivera is urging the Senate leadership that
despite Senator Diaz’s stating he will not accept the posts, the Senate should vote for Senator Diaz
to become the next Majority Leader.

“There’s no one better than Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr. to occupy the post of Majority Leader
and continue the work began by Senator Espada. Senator Diaz is loved in our borough. He
has the strength, experience and courage to step up when needed. He knows how to get
results and I am confident he will be an exceptional Majority Leader. Senator Diaz has been
in the Senate since 2002 and we (Bronxites) need to do our best to keep the position and the
resources that come along with it. We need every dollar we can get,” stated Rivera.

Rivera, who has been the Founder and Executive Director of Hands On New York since it first began
to help residents of the Bronx in 2002, also urged the newly-elected Senator of the 33 rd District,
Gustavo Rivera, to unite behind this call and encourage the State Senate leadership to select Senator
Diaz as the next Majority Leader.

“Our district and borough has many urgent needs, primarily jobs. The Kingsbridge Armory
can no longer sit there, deteriorating when we can have Bronxites working. Having the
Majority Leader from the Bronx, and on our side, will help in meeting this need. I strongly
urge the incoming Senator from my district to be courageous and support Senator Diaz for
Majority Leader,” concluded Rivera.
