Dear members of SPE-UTP-SC ,

First of all, it is my pleasure to welcome you as a part of Society of

Petroleum Engineers – Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Student
Chapter (SPE-UTP-SC). As a new initiative that we have introduce
this term, our monthly newsletter entitled will be a channel for
members to find out about the current happenings in the society as
well as the updates on future events we will be hosting.

In my opinion, SPE-UTP-SC is a great platform for students to seek in

depth knowledge of oil and gas industry. Recognized worldwide via
its parent body, Society of Petroleum Engineers International based
in Houston, SPE network has become an avenue for the exchange of
knowledge and information on every aspect of the industry. I have
personally benefited from this society since I first joined in 2008. I
expanded my perspective in the industry beyond what I know via the
textbooks by joining various events such as symposiums,
conferences, workshop, etc. Knowing the importance of such
additional knowledge, it becomes my utmost priority to ensure
students of UTP could garner the same experience as I have done via
SPE-UTP-SC. And that has become my goal for this term in the office.

An immediate target of mine was to vary the demography of

members in SPE-UTP-SC. I see the need to clear the misconception
that SPE-UTP-SC is only for Petroleum Engineering students. The
truth is, SPE-UTP-SC is open to all the students who aim to make the
leap into oil and gas industry upon graduating, regardless if one is
from Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and Electronic, Chemical or even
Technology discipline. Another aspect of variation is the inclusion of
postgraduate students in the membership roster. In a way, upon
receiving the membership login that SPE International provides,
these postgraduate students will have limitless access to the valuable
technical papers that may be obtained in www.spe.org. In return, I
hope that postgraduate students can share their in knowledge and
experience in the industry with the Undergraduates, given the fact
that most of them have working experience before.
In the past, I hope that there would be more effective ways to
communicate with the members. That is where I hope this
newsletter will be of a good use to maximize communication with all
of you. We will still maintain the traditional method of carrying out
publicity via posters in campus, elearning, etc. Nonetheless, a
newsletter offers a new dimension of communication. It allows
members to find out about latest updates of the society by simply
logging into their email respectively without having to step a foot out
of their dormitories. This newsletter is still at an experimental stage.
However, it is my hope that with delicate evolution, it will be able to
explore its full benefits in communicating information to all of you as
the members. We will ensure that there will be creative

input which will benefit the members in the
newsletter and becoming a full-fledge
communication tool in near future.
Before concluding I wish to express my
gratitude to the contributions of every working
executive committee members and members
into the society for the first month I am in the
office. I hope you will enjoy the content of this
newsletter, and for the editor’s part, I hope
they will continue to tweak and improve the
coming newsletters to make it more relevant to
the needs of the students.

Hello everyone! This month, Society of Petroleum Engineering of Universiti
Teknologi PETRONAS Student Chapter (SPE-UTP-SC), will be conducting a survey
on SPE-UTP-SC for all Geosciences and Petroleum Engineering (GPE) students
and SPE-UTP-SC members. It’s very easy. You just need to answer the questions
given and give us your feedback.
The objective of this survey is to improve SPE-UTP-SC services for all students
especially SPE-UTP-SC members and GPE students. Through this survey, we
would like to know more about the students’ perspective towards SPE-UTP-SC,
their needs and opinions so that we will be able to improve the welfare of GPE
student and SPE-UTP-SC students, as well as organising activities that suits
everyone. Besides that, SPE-UTP-SC will be aware of the best way to promote
and spread news on recent activities.
Over the past several years, the use of internship
programme as part of the recruitment process has
increased tremendously. Employers report that
interns are the best source of new full-time
employees, according to recent NACE (National
Association of Colleges and Employers) surveys.
However, how to create an effective internship in
the field of your choice and reap the unlimited
benefits that come with firsthand experiences? In
response to this challenge, SPE-UTP-SC proudly
presents you the Internship Preparation Workshop
– your first step towards your professional career.

out above the rest. This Résumé Writing
Workshop covers the basic components of a
résumé, formatting strategies and emphasizes the
importance of tailoring your résumé to a particular
position. Next, a presentation on the general
internship process will expose you to details on the
general internship process which requires proper
planning and a significant amount of effort. This
session will be led by the Career Advisor, Mr. Nor
Idham Che Ghani. He currently heads the
Counselling and Career Guidance Division at
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS and has more than
10 years of experience as a Career Counselor.

Part 2 : Internship Sharing Forum

Most of us have the misled perception on the oil and gas industry – we always assume that the oil and gas industry is meant for those
with an engineering degree or related areas such as geology only. In fact, the energy sector has a broad range of opportunities open to
young people across many sectors: oil, gas, biomass, new energies, and oil related industries. The needs for new skills and talents over
the coming years and the opportunities in the energy sector are huge. In this forum, a few experienced interns who managed to secure
their internships in different companies, from overseas or local will be invited to share their insights. The interns are from both technical
and non-technical backgrounds. They are also invited to answer the queries and doubts of students regarding their internship
placements.

For this semester, SPE-UTP-SC intends to organize a Geoscience & Petroleum Engineering Department Dinner for, of course,
everyone involved with the GPE Department. This dinner is an initiative by SPE-UTP-SC in collaboration with the Geoscience & Petroleum
Engineering Department as part of the continued efforts in looking after the general welfare of the GPE department personnel and
students. SPE-UTP-SC will combine the Geoscience & Petroleum Engineering Department Dinner with two agendas, namely the:
 Dean’s List Awards Ceremony
 SPE-KL Scholarships Award Ceremony
The dinner, through the Dean’s List Awards Ceremony, will recognize the efforts of GPE students who are in the Dean’s List. In
addition to that, SPE-UTP-SC is glad to invite SPE-KL to be a part of the Geoscience & Petroleum Engineering Department Dinner, where
the SPE-KL representative will be presenting scholarships to selected UTP students on the night itself via a SPE-KL Scholarships Award
Ceremony

We have set up booth at Pocket D Foyer
to recruit new members and to promote
about SPE. About 215 students registered
to become member of the club. A fee of
RM5 is charged to each registered
member and a book titled “FUEL FOR
LIFE” is given to them.
After the committee recruitment is
over, we had our first departmental
meeting and proceeded with
completing the new database for SPE
to submit to JPSP.
We registered the members under SPE
US student chapter and their
membership cards will be delivered to
them at January 2011.
Currently, we are printing the
membership cards for SPE-UTP-SC and
discussing about the merchandises that
will be given out during membership card
distribution. We are trying to
accommodate more privileges to be
enjoyed by members for joining the SPE
US student chapter and SPE-UTP-SC.
To conclude, SPE-UTP-SC looks forward to organizing this dinner, which will not
only reach out positively to the welfare of all GPE department personnel, but also
serve as a platform which celebrates the academic excellence of GPE students.
OBJECTIVES
o To act as an appreciation dinner for all GPE Department lecturers,
staff and students.
o To provide a platform of recognition of the academic achievements of
GPE Department students in the Dean’s List by functioning as a Dean’s
List Award Ceremony.
o To provide a ceremonial platform for the awarding of scholarships by
SPE-KL to Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS students.
Hello everyone, my name is Raheel Ahmed Shaikh and
I come from Pakistan. I am doing my final year in
Electrical and Electronics Engineering and I am
PETRONAS sponsored. Last semester I have
completed my Industrial Internship for eight months,
where in I came to learn a lot of new things so today I
would like to share my internship experience with all
of you. I got my internship at Petronas CARIGALI
Pakistan Limited (PCPL) with the help of Student
Industrial Internship Unit (SIIU), where in I was placed
in Reliability and Integrity Engineering (RIE) Department at PCPL head office. The key
responsibilities of the department are to make sure that all the equipments are functioning
with great reliability and less RTF (Risk to Failure).
Petronas CARIGALI (Pakistan) Ltd had its first production of sales gas in 2005 and is the
owner of Gas Processing Facility (GPF) called Rehmat Gas Plant (RGP). The Company is
currently producing Natural Gas along with the barrels of Condensate. The gas produced is
processed at the GPF Rehmat Gas Plant before its sale to the Sui Northern Gas Pipeline
limited (SNGPL), which is responsible for the distribution of Gas to the North of Pakistan.
During the internship I was attached at PETRONAS field for 1 month, where in I experienced
the real industry for the first time. It is no doubt a great feeling to witness the plant site for
an internee. For the first 2 weeks, I was mostly attached with the operations crew, where I
came to know about the various stages involved in gas processing. While for the rest of the
time, I was attached with Electrical and Instrument (E&I) team, where I came to understand
the functioning and requirement of each instrument as well as the generation and
distribution specifications for the Electrical power at site.
The remaining period I was at the office, where in I used to handle the contracts and
tenders for the equipments and their spares. Although I was placed in RIE department, I
didn’t keep myself restricted; I was involved in the operational activities as well as
petroleum activities. I also handled the project of Fire Gas & Smoke Detectors (FGS) as my
internship project.
Internship is not mainly about what big organization you are working with or what do they
deal in, however it is about how you cope yourself to the corporate standards of
multidisciplinary fields. The essence and experience of industry life makes you confident
and first ever view that you are able to meet all the challenges of your respective fields
hence confidence boosts up and you strive for more proficiency for the future. I would
suggest to all the students that study smart enrich yourself to all the important aspects of
your field of study, try to develop the levels of good, determined, committed team member
and genius enough to tackle all the issues and give appropriate solutions to the problems
around you. Hence when one gets the exposure to industry with all the respective strengths
he will get the most of that opportunity.
I not only had a chance to combine my theoretical knowledge with the practical one, but I
also learnt the management and leadership skills. I came to know that restricting yourself to
one field isn’t a wise decision for a student, unless you are recruited at any industry. Thus I
would like to advice everyone to stay active in the co- curriculum activities to improve soft
skills and study about different fields to widen your scope and credibility. Thank you.
