Power & Its Types
• Power : It is the ability of a leader to
influence his followers. It can be defined
as a tool used to get a task done, that
otherwise wouldn’t have been done.
• Types of power :
1. Positional
2. Personal
Positional Power
• Derived from the top management of the
organization.
• Managers use this power for the
following reasons :
1. Reward- Used to value employees
2. Coercive- Used to punish employees
3. Legitimate- Used to instruct employees
Personal Power
• It is earned by an individual within the
organization.
• Leaders use this type of power for the
following reasons :
1. Expert : Other fellow employees believe that
the leader possesses expertise knowledge and
skills.
2. Referent : Other fellow employees identify
themselves with the leader, or consider him as
a role model.
