Both are hyperglycemic condition that occurs in the morning but with different
mechanism

How to know whether the hyperglycemia occur due to Somogyi effect or Dawn
phenomenon
• Take the glucose level reading between 2 and
3 in the morning for several night in a row:
– If sugar consistently low = Somogyi effect
– If sugar is normal or high = Dawn phenomenon
