Definition of Grammar Translation
Method
• a traditional technique of foreign-language
teaching
• based on explicit instruction in the
grammatical analysis of the target
language and translation of sentences
from the native language into the target
language and vice versa.
• Emphasises on teaching grammar and
vocabulary
• Students learn grammar rules and
vocabulary
• Students develop the ability to read
texts
• Students learn to read and write in
the target language accurately
• Would not help the students’ listening
and speaking skills if instruction is
given in mother tongue language.
Techniques used
• Students translate literary passages
• Reading comprehension questions
• Cognates memorisation (meaning
and spelling of words)
Disadvantages
• The authority falls to teachers
• Teacher-centred learning
• Students become passive
• More to one-way interaction
• Lack of interaction with peers in
classroom
• Stress is more on reading and writing
skills
