The Do’s and Don’ts of Expository Essays

(According to Mrs. Miller’s 5B Class)

Do’s Don’ts

 Five paragraphs (no more, no less)  One big paragraph as your essay
 Stay on topic  Write in pen
 Use proper grammar  Go off topic
 Use FRIES (Facts, Reasons,  Use incorrect punctuation
Incidents, Examples, Statistics,  Double-space, also no spaces
Sensory Details) between paragraphs
 Have a thesis statement (3-point)  Use slang (ain’t, dawg, yo, wazzup)
 Plan before you write  Write run-on sentences or
