DEFIANT NLD HELD 22ND ANNIVERSARY

Defying the Union Election Commission (UEC) of the ruling military regime’s order, which abol-
ished the National League for Democracy ( NLD ) as a political party for its failure to re-register
with the UEC for its continuous existence, over 150 members of the NLD headed by Vice-
Chairman of the party U Tin Oo ( 83 ) held a mass meeting to commemorate the 22nd anniversary
of the founding of the party within the compound of U Tin Oo’s residence this morning in Rangoon.

Speeches were delivered at this ceremony by Thura U Tin Oo (former Commander-in-Chief), and
veteran journalist U Win Tin ( 80 ) on ways and means of consolidating the NLD and keeping the
spirit of democracy “alive and strong.”

In his briefing to media at this ceremony, Chief spokesman of the NLD U Nyan Win said: “We of
the NLD look upon the Union Elections Commission’s order, which declared NLD as null and void,
as unlawful order as UEC has never been vested with such power. As such we are still engaged in
the task of reinvigorating the NLD.”

“That is why our leaders including U Win Tin have recently been taking organizational trips all
around the country for reconsolidating the strength of our party and for urging all our party mem-
bers and sympathizers to stay united under the banner of the NLD,” U Nyan Win declared.

Referring to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s preparations to lodge a direct complaint with the Supreme
Court against the UEC’s order of dissolution of the NLD, U Nyan Win said “as of now we are also
engaged in this task of proving that UEC has been endowed with no such power.”

Until last night, altogether five political parties including the National Unity Party ( former Burma
Socialist Program Party of the late General Ne Win ) and an independent party namely Democratic
Party ( Myanmar ) have presented their respective policy standpoints and work programs over the
state-owned TV and radio for 15 minutes each after the evening news program. The political par-
ties are given this right each beginning from 24 September.
