Women Tackling Sports

(Anything you can do…)

Just because women don’t wear tight shorts and fight in a

no-holds-bar cage match, doesn’t mean their sports are not exciting.

The question really is, “Are they given a chance?” Men’s Sports have

dominated T.V. shows, the internet, arenas, and mostly people’s

thoughts. Women’s sports are rarely on T.V., they get barley and

advertising, and they are, quite frankly, misunderstood. Is it time for a

change?

Women have come a long way from being able to get an

education, to being able to vote, and in the world wars, getting to play

sports. Being able to take part in something that was unavailable for

some time must have felt great! Women, back in the early 1900’s, had

very few players. Currently the amount of female athletes has gone up

dramatically. Statistics show that women, who play sports or at least

exercise, are less likely to develop breast cancer. Sports can be very

good for the human body and women are taking note of this by
excelling in the greater advantage of sport playing. Women now have

their own separate leagues from men, but are they equal?

In 2001, a WNBA player made on average $45,000.00. The

Average NBA player made around $500,000.00. Talk about a price

difference. Now I realize that the NBA has been around longer and

maybe that’s why it brings in more money, however, People are so

used to watching men they are not giving females that great of a

chance to prove their skills. In a recent interview done by Wendi

Rutkowski, she stated, “When I grew up it was pretty much unheard of

watching women’s sports on television. The Olympics was the best

chance to see it.” Today, there are more of women’s sports aired on

T.V. but still it is not a close margin of how many more men’s sports are

on.

In an article written by Erik Dorn, a Utah college student, He talks

about would you rather questions to describe women and sports. He

said, “Would you rather attend a WNBA game or drink a shot of horse whiz while
being pelted by goose feces? I just have one thing to say: Bring on the horse

whiz.” Now call me Harry Carry and beat me with a wet sock, but that’s

a little extreme. He is not even looking at the brighter side to women’s

sports. With the exception of Elizabeth Lambert, a college soccer

player who plays very dirty, women are all around less violent

during the games; at least compared to men. They don’t use steroids

to cheat, they have morals other than to go out and kill someone, so

why can’t people give them a chance?

Women have fought through some very tough times. Males will

never experience some of the pains women have been through,

don’t get me started on birth or the monthly period; I’m talking

about sports here. Women should be treated in sports just as equal

as men are. WO-MEN, See the word women, has men in it so they are

like a combined form. Give women the chance they deserve. Put

their games on a Friday night. Give them more of the athletic

booster funds. Anything men can do women can do, all men get

women should get too.
