    Chronic osteomyelitis is a bone infection that develops due to predisposing factors such as old age, male gender, diabetes, and prosthetic devices. Precipitating factors include IV drug use, smoking, poor nutrition, and dental infections. The disease process begins when microorganisms enter through an open wound or fracture and lodge in poorly circulated bone areas. This allows the microorganisms to grow, causing inflammation, fluid buildup, and vascular compromise of the periosteum. Over time, patients experience symptoms such as fever, bone pain, swelling, and restricted movement of the affected area.
