Research Paper Topic 1 - An overview of how your organization or industry approaches information

management (2000 ±200 words)

Be sure to read Section 8 in the Program Guidelines (Resource tab). Pay particular attention to the
bullet item about required outside references.

Organization-Specific Case Study:

Consider your case-study organization and reflect on the history of computing and of information security that
you have begun studying in the first three weeks of your course. Ask yourself and others in your organization:

1. Depending on the age of your organization,

a) If your organization’s computing history is at least 20 years old, to what extent you see holdovers
from the early days of computing?

b) If your organization’s computer history is less than 20 years old, what problems or issues in your
organization’s early days resemble those that you have been studying? Or, what issues from those
early days still influence your organization’s approach to information technology and information
processing?

2. To what extent have your computing infrastructure, and the security problems you face, moved beyond
the fundamental problems described so far?

Your paper must include a response to this:.

• Are there islands of independent information processing in your organization? Do some of the
problems you have read about and discussed crop up because of decentralization of this kind? Be
specific.

In addition, explore at least two other significant information management issues for your organization.
Describe successes and failures that you have experienced or observed, or that have been documented or
publicized. Suggestions include:

• Centralization/decentralization of information management

• Management of application development and/or procurement
• Management of information sharing within your organization and between your organization and other
entities
• Any other issue that you identify

Take positions and defend them with specific examples from publications (references!) and from interviews
within your case study from both functional and financial perspectives.

Remember that the research you do for these essays will serve as the foundation for your end-of-seminar
report. You are not required to include detailed recommendations for improvement in these interim reports.
