Is high C all it claims to be?

Hypothesis- Which fruit juice contains the most vitamin C?

Plan
Which type of fruit juice provides the most vitamin C? In this experiment I will test different
fruit juices with the same standard to see which provides the most vitamin C. I will record the
volume of DCPIP needed to decolourise the juice three times. This variable will change during
the experiment. I will use the same amount of juice in each test to insure my results are accurate.
Apparatus

• Range of fruit and or fruit juices

• Standard 1% vitamin C solution
• DCPIP 1%
• Pipette, syringe or burette to measure volumes accurately
• Standard laboratory glassware and apparatus

Introduction
Which fruit juice will contain the most vitamin C. I Predict Orange drink will have high vitamin
C content. In this experiment I will be testing several different fruit juices to see “Is high C all it
claims to be?”

Method

- I filled a Beaker with 1cm³ of DCPIP.

- I then filled the pipette with the same amount of juice.
- I gradually added the juice to the DCPIP keeping count of how much cm³
Of juice I put in.
- When the DCPIP turned colourless depending on which juice, I recorded my results in a
table
 I repeated this 3 times to get three sets of result for each fruit juice.
Results
Discussion
The results show that orange drink need the least amount of juice to decolourise 1cm³ of DCPIP.
This confirms my prediction in the introduction as correct.
The result clearly show the more vitamin C content in a drink has the least it needs to
decolourise DCPIP. I would say these results are quite valid as I tested each juice/drink 3 times
and worked out the average. “Most of us think of citrus fruits as being the best source of
vitamin C. You'd get 60 mg/day from about 3/4 cup of orange juice.” When it comes to
vitamin C researchers suggest citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons which are the
highest in vitamin C content.
In an ideal situation I would have tested more fruit juices.

Summary
I tested which fruit juices contained the most vitamin C, I found that citrus
fruits such as oranges and lemons were high in vitamin C compared to other
fruits such as pineapple.
