Road Salt quickly makes its way to area streams, JS Online, 12/10/09

Hours after the roads of Milwaukee and its surrounding suburbs salted the roads due to
extreme weather conditions, the salt started to shift into nearby streams. The road salt is
harsh, and melts through the ice, contaminating the water beneath. This ice could potentially
kill fish and other aquatic life. Wildlife environmentalists are trying to decipher ways to extract
it from the waters.

I think that it is unavoidable for the salt to get into the water, because people need to be able
to drive without skidding around on the road. I hope that they find a way, however, to keep
the salt from harming the aquatic animals. I think that if they don’t, it will cause much damage
to the surrounding ecosystems.
