GE,DELL,INTEL & OTHERS:THE
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE OF
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
What are the several ways that IT could provide a
competitive advantage to a business?
This case is based on Nicholas Carr’s
arguement that “IT doesn’t matter”

Carr thinks that IT is nothing more than the

infrastructure of modern business. Carr
thinks that today’s main risk is not
underusing IT but overspending on it.

But Jeff Immelt ( CEO of GE), Micheal Dell

(CEO of Dell) & Andy Grove (Former CEO
of Intel) disgrees with Carr’s point of view.
GE: Being a service oriented company, GE
values technology more than investing in
plant and machinery.

Dell: Anything in business could either be

a sinkhole or a competitive advantage, and
this depends on the way the work is done,
whether its done well or bad.

Intel: Its only because of IT that the

commercial-transaction processing in US
& Europe has reached the top of S-curve.
