Biennial Inter Varsity Games (BIG 25th)
Biennial Inter Varsity Games (BIG 25th)
(BIG 25th)
The games officially started in 1951 as a biennial event, Biennial Intervarsity Games (BIG), after a
number of exchanges between Singapore and Hong Kong Universities. With the separation of
Universiti Malaya from the then Singapore University, the games included 3 universities and over the
years, more universities expressed interest.
This biennial event became triennial in 1982 to allow universities time to prepare and raise the
necessary funds. TIG was discontinued for almost 10 years after it was last hosted by NUS in 1997,
due to the lack of resources and financial support.
The 24th TIG was successfully revived in Singapore in July 2009. A total of six universities
participated in this event. They are Hong Kong University (HKU), National University of Singapore
(NUS), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), University of Macau, Fudan University and University of
Indonesia.
+ Allow athletes the opportunity to pit their skills against their overseas counterparts;
+ Promote friendships, teamwork and sportsmanship among the athletes;
+ Expose the athletes to other cultures;
+ Strengthen ties between participating universities.
PHUI was established in 1987. This took place due to the fact that those students who like
this sport had an idea
to have a relevant institute for them.
