Within certain plays that are performed in society today, certain themes, dramatic
techniques, styles and conventions are effectively used to portray messages that explore
issues surrounding identity, relationships, acceptance and belonging. Recently, two
productions that effectively explored these issues are ‘Stockholm’ by Bryony Lavery and ‘The
7 Stages of Grieving’ by Wesley Enoch and Deborah Mailman.

‘The 7 Stages of Grieving’ is a one-woman performance that captures the attention of the
young as well as the old. Its ability to hold the attentiveness of the audience demonstrates
the importance of the messages and ideologies presented. This contemporary performance
follows the emotional upheaving experiences of an indigenous woman (Aboriginal
‘Everywoman’), through several short episodic scenes. The play focuses on the political and
Indigenous histories associated with Australia. Lisa Flanagan, a nomadic performer,
effectively uses the elements of drama previously mentioned to portray and explore the
issues surrounding the identity, relationships, acceptance and belonging of Indigenous
Australians..
