Welcome from the

President of Lansdowne
Football Club
As President of Lansdowne Football Club it gives me great pleasure to extend a warm
welcome to all our visitors to Lansdowne Road and to our refurbished Clubhouse and all
weather rugby pitch.

During the past three years we have had to play our matches away from Lansdowne Road
while the Stadium and our Clubhouse were being refurbished. We were fortunate that
we played our senior matches in the RDS and we would like to thank the Leinster Branch
for their assistance to us during this time. We would also like to thank Monkstown FC for
accommodating us for training purposes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The three years away from our home could have been more difficult except for the
commitment, dedication and work carried out by the three Presidents, Paddy Halpenny,
John Kearney and Mark Dawson during the time who ensured that the great rugby
tradition and ethos of Lansdowne Football Club was maintained during this period.

The refurbishment of our Clubhouse was overseen by a dedicated group of members

whose commitment and attention to detail during the past 18 months has been
magnificent. There were many members who offered their services and advise and to
whom we say thank you. However I would like to extend my appreciation on behalf
of the members of the Club to the core committee of Joe Leddin, Rory Williams, Mark
Dawson, Mahon Murphy, Dermot McCarron, and Kieran Mulligan for their tireless work
and dedication to the very successful completion of this project. I have no doubt our
members, guests and visitors will enjoy many great days and evenings in the Clubhouse
for years to come.

Last season was highly successful with great progress being made at all levels highlighted
by the firsts winning Division 2 and getting promoted back to Division 1B, a superb double
by the seconds and the Under 21s getting to the All Ireland Final. It is our intention to
build on these achievements as we strive for promotion to Division 1A.

We are delighted our senior coaching panel from last season, Willie Clancy, Aidan Mc
Cullen, Gordon Darcy and Stephen O Connor are in place again. I am also delighted that
all our teams have coaches in place for the coming season and I would like to take this
opportunity to thank all the Players, Coaches, Managers, Bag men, and Supporters for
their ongoing commitment and dedication.

I would like to extend sincere thanks to our main sponsor Zurich who has supported
us since the inception of the All Ireland over twenty years ago. They have been great
partners and friends of Lansdowne and it is great to have their continued support for the
coming season. I would also like to extend our thanks to our other sponsors, Airtricity, An
Post, Heineken, Mainstream Renewable Energy, Park Developments and Permanent TSB.

Finally I would like to thank our Executive Committee who are constantly striving to
improve the capabilities of Lansdowne Football Club. In particular I would like to welcome
Conor Shaw as our new Chairman.

On the rugby front, I would like to wish all our teams from the Senior Team right through
to all our mini rugby teams every success and enjoyment in the coming season.

Lastly, many thanks to Derry Shaw, Paul Van Cauwelaert, Eleanor Connolly and Dermot
McCarron for producing another excellent yearbook which contains many fine articles
and pictures of interest.

I hope you enjoy the hospitality of Lansdowne Football Club.

IRFU President’s Message

It is a special pleasure for me as President of the Irish Rugby Football Union to write this
message for Lansdowne FC. Being President of the Union is an honour I share with the
club and its members, all the more so as the club has now had 14 members to hold the
office.

Some of my happiest playing days were with Lansdowne and particularly with a great
group of players on a Leinster Senior Cup winning side of 1965.

This is a very exciting and challenging season for the club. After some years “on the road’’
all members are delighted to be returning to the clubhouse at Lansdowne Road. The
years away from home base have been very difficult and everyone involved over the years
deserves enormous credit for keeping the unity and focus of the club intact.

It will also be a special year on the playing field when the 1st XV returns to Division One
following an outstanding season last year. All rugby followers know that Lansdowne’s
return will strengthen Division One and will add to the competitiveness and rivalry of the
reconstructed League.

Willing volunteers are the lifeblood of any club. Players do not always full recognize or
appreciate how much effort, experience, time and sheer hard work goes into ensuring
that a club of Lansdowne’s history and tradition functions as the highest level. I can still
recall the contributions made during my playing days by legendary figures such as Billy
Sutherland, Con Murphy and Jack Dawson.

Once again this season the club has an equally talented and dedicated group of men and
women doing the work which keeps club rugby so healthy, vibrant and enjoyable. All
this voluntary effort ensures that the club caters for everybody from minis to 1st XV and
at all levels of ability.

13
www.lansdownerugby.com
Lansdowne F.C. Yearbook 2010/11

I would like to wish Ciaran O’Reilly and all players and members a most enjoyable and
successful season and I look forward to being with you whenever I can.

Caleb Powell
President
Irish Rugby Football Union 2010/11

* Caleb Powell’s nomination to the highest office in Irish rugby brings to 14 the number
of members from Lansdowne FC to be so honoured. He was President of the Lansdowne
club in 1993-’94 and also President of the Leinster Branch, IRFU in 1997-‘98.

A native of Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, the retired deputy head at The King’s Hospital
school, who is married to Gillian and has three children, Bob, Lynn and David; has had a
distinguished career as a player, coach and administrator.

A member of the IRFU Committee since season 1998-’99, the new President has sat on a
variety of Committees and is well known for his rich contribution to the schools game. He
was the schools’ representative on the Leinster Branch for 20 years, from 1980 to 2006.

Educated at The King’s Hospital, Dublin University and London University; Caleb was a
noted second row forward with Nenagh Ormond, UL Bohemians, Dublin University and
Lansdowne. He won two Munster senior cup medals with Bohemians in 1957 and ’58
and captained Lansdowne to Leinster senior cup success in 1965. He was capped for
Munster during the interprovincial championship of 1962-’63.

Following his playing days, Caleb coached the King’s Hospital School, Lansdowne, the
Leinster schools and the Ireland schools team.

* The previous members of Lansdowne FC to become President of the IRFU were –

Message from
the President of the
Leinster Branch
It is my great pleasure as President of the Leinster Branch to wish Lansdowne FC the best
of luck in the forthcoming campaign at all levels of the club.

Lansdowne has a proud tradition in Leinster and Irish rugby and you continue to produce
outstanding players, coaches and administrators who have greatly enriched the game of
rugby. I look forward to renewing friendships again this year and I would like to wish your
President Ciaran O’Reilly the best of luck in his term in office. Having gained promotion
to AIL Division 1B Lansdowne are on a strong footing to push on again this year and they
will be a real force to contend with.

You are well served by all of your committee members, not least the club’s Junior
Vice President and past President of the Leinster Branch Paddy Boylan who gives such
outstanding service on the Leinster Branch Executive Committee. Leinster Rugby are also
in extremely capable hands under the stewardship of our own CEO Mick Dawson, a
proud Lansdowne club member, and I would like to extend a special congratulations to
the club on Caleb Powell’s Presidency of the IRFU this year.

It is an exciting time for Leinster and Irish rugby. The expanded Magners League, with the
addition of two Italian clubs means that we will have to raise our standards once more
but I am confident that under our new coaching team, headed by Joe Schmidt, that we
have the talent, the mental and physical wherewithal and the desire to push on both in
the Magners League and the Heineken Cup competitions.

To our main sponsors Bank of Ireland, and indeed to all those who invest in the various
strands of the game in the province, thank you for your ongoing commitment.

With it being a Rugby World Cup year the profile of the game in Ireland is sure to increase
both locally and internationally. We are extremely proud of the massive strides that have
been made by our senior team in recent years and with season ticket sales at a record

17
www.lansdownerugby.com
Lansdowne F.C. Yearbook 2010/11

high I would urge each and every club to once again show your support to each of our
representative sides as they bid to bring success to the province.

Our Academy and underage structures are flourishing and with the ongoing success of
our Women’s, Youths and Mini sections, we are approaching this new era on a strong
footing. We are determined to improve the infrastructure of all of our sides and the
Leinster community wouldn’t be where it is today without the dedication and support of
our clubs who play such a vital role in spreading the word at grassroots level.

Our ‘One Province’ ticketing initiative, which invites clubs to feature at half time in our
Magners League and Heineken Cup home games, continues to go from strength to
strength and over 2,500 Mini players and coaches visited the RDS last year under this
scheme. We hope to strengthen the bonds between the club and the professional game
across the province even more this year. The move to the Aviva Stadium for some of our
matches will be an exciting departure for the province and the increased seating and top
class facilities will further strengthen Leinster’s standing.

It is an exciting time for senior clubs with the advent next season of the newly-structured
52 team All-Ireland League. Our clubs continue to compete at the cutting edge and as
we enter this new era it is important that you maximise the resources within the Leinster
Branch to enable you to achieve your potential on and off the field.

Our team of Community Rugby, Coach Development and Club Community Rugby
Officers, Domestic Game administrators, Commercial & Marketing committee members,
the Referees section and the Media & Communications department are all at your
disposal. I would urge you to use them.

There is a surfeit of professional and voluntary expertise within Leinster Rugby who can
help you increase participation, boost membership, generate revenue and generally raise
awareness of your club in the local community. With that in mind I would urge you to
use the weekly Evening Herald supplement each Friday. With a daily readership of over
320,000, this is proving to be an important promotional tool for all our junior and senior
clubs at all levels. Simply e-mail stories@leinsterrugby.ie with any articles or photos of
interest and I have no doubt that your club will reap the rewards and positive publicity
in the near future.

Message from our

Main Club Sponsor
Zurich is delighted to enter its 21st season as club sponsor. It is one of the longest
associations in Irish rugby and, on behalf of Zurich, we would like to thank Eleanor
Connolly, Joe Leddin and the team in ensuring a long successful relationship.

This season kicks of with an exciting start! September marks the opening of the much
anticipated new Lansdowne club house back at Lansdowne Road. I am sure you’ll agree it
is a fantastic facility for all the club members to enjoy. The club house has been completely
renovated and features state of the art facilities including a dedicated gym area, light
filled function spaces and a member’s bar with views over the new all weather pitch.

Last season was highly successful for Lansdowne. Congratulations to the club on their
promotion to Division 1B. I have no doubt this achievement was down to the dedication
and commitment of the players, coaches and managers. I am sure the new all weather
pitch will assist the players greatly in the coming season.

I would like to welcome Ciaran O’Reilly as the new president of the Club and wish him
every success in the season ahead – which I am sure will be successful for the club both
on and off the pitch!

Finally I would like to wish all the club teams, from the senior squad to the highly
successful youth and mini section every success in the coming season. Enjoy the new
club house and the return to Lansdowne Road!

A Word from the Captain

Of Lansdowne F.C.
As captain of Lansdowne FC I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today
and invite you to enjoy our hospitality on what should be an entertaining afternoon here
in Lansdowne.

I would like to thank both Monkstown FC and the RDS for the use of their training and
playing facilities over the past three seasons and was greatful that such facilities were
available to us while Lansdowne was being redeveloped.

On behalf of all the players I would like to sincerely thank everyone involved in the
construction of our new clubhouse, it is a fantastic facility and one which we can all be
extremely proud of.

Following on from the success of last season it is imperative that we move on and don’t
dwell on last year. As everyone knows it is going to be an extremely difficult season and
a huge challenge , but one that everyone involved is relishing.

Very little has changed behind the scenes from last year. Stephen Rooney continues as
director of rugby, Willie Clancy, Aidan Mccullen, Stephen O’Connor and Gordon D’arcy
as coaches, Brian Corrigan as manager and Mick Quinn along with Paddy Gore continues
to pull the strings every Saturday. I wish to thank them, on behalf of all the members of
the senior squad, for their hard work in advance of the coming campaign

Best wishes to Ciaran O’Reilly in his role as club President this season. I am sure his tenure
will be a successful one.

Thanks again to all our sponsors, especially Zurich. In the current climate your support is
greatly appreciated and needed to run a club of our standing.

Lastly I would like to encourage everyone here today to enjoy our hospitality and what
should be an excellent game.

Chairman’s Report
2010/11 Season
Nothing is as constant as change and Lansdowne FC embark on another momentous
change this year as we return to Lansdowne Road. However somethings remain the
same, we will be playing Rugby Football at Lansdowne Road again in the 2010/2011
season and Lansdowne are back into Division 1B with great momentum to rise to Division
1A during the coming season.

I am delighted and honoured to represent the membership of Lansdowne FC this year

serving as Chairman, following the footsteps of Dermot McCarron and Michael Kearney
to both we owe an enormous debt of gratitude. I have enjoyed every one of my 27 years
as a member of Lansdowne, none more so than the last two as chairman of Mini Rugby.
Handling, via a great team of volunteers, 250 active children and their parents I hope has
equipped me somewhat for the challenges and fun that lie ahead. I welcome input and
feedback from all members on how we can drive our great club further into the future.
The enthusiastic and progressive membership of Lansdowne Football Club fills me with
excitement and ambition for our future.

Our First Squad, under the watchful eyes of Willie Clancy, Stephen O’Connor, Aidan
McCullen and Gordon D’Arcy, are fitter and better prepared this season than ever. I
would like to thank Karl Cleere, on his playing retirement, best wishes after many years
of stalwart service to the club on and off the pitch, the off the pitch service will continue
for many more years to come. This year we welcome many new playing members to
Lansdowne and I wish them a long, fruitful and enjoyable membership of Lansdowne. To
our first squad and indeed all of our teams best wishes for the continued development
of your abilities and results on the pitch in the various competitions in which we compete
this year.

Our U21s build again on recent years successes to provide a compelling development
opportunity for elite players and a great welcome and enjoyable club atmosphere for all.
Lansdowne remains an attractive proposition for players of all abilities, to John Kearney,
Charlie Quinn, Declan Fassbender, Brian McDermot and all associated with this squad we
look forward to more successes this year.

27
www.lansdownerugby.com
Lansdowne F.C. Yearbook 2010/11

Our track record on the pitch over our entire history has been envied across the land,
in particular recently in the areas of player and coach development. Steve Rooney and
Graham Quinn are joined this year by Ricky Geraghty and Shane Whelan on the Rugby
committee. A solid foundation provides for further and more ambitious development
of Lansdowne Rugby over the coming seasons. Gerry Moloney is stepping down from
the day to day commitments of the Rugby committee in 2010/2011, but his advice and
support is always available. Since 2000 Gerry has done an outstanding job for the club as
Chairman of Junior Rugby and many of those years were spent out standing in the cold
and wet in Kilgobbin and latterly Ballycorus. I have no doubt if you are looking for him
on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon during the season he will be easily found. The club
owes an enormous debt of gratitude to Gerry.

For those perhaps looking to keep fit during the summer or maintain the spirit of playing
Rugby after the body has weakened somewhat the summer Tag teams are active and to
be encouraged.

Lansdowne boasts one of the largest and most active playing communities in Ireland.
In addition to the six adult teams our Mini and Youth Sections develop our players of
the future while also providing a great fun and community spirit for former players their
children and new friends of Lansdowne both young and old through Lansdowne Mini
Rugby.

On all fronts, despite the location challenges of the past few years, Lansdowne return to
Landsowne Road an even stronger club. We are forever indebted for the hard work of
the recent executive and sub committees led by past presidents Paddy Halpenny, John
Kearney and Mark Dawson. Together they have built a platform for the next era of
Lansdowne. In the coming years under the leadership of Ciaran O’Reilly, Paddy Boylan
and Dermot McCarron, the executive and new sub committees are prepared to drive
Lansdowne into the future, continuing as an open, friendly, progressive world renowned
rugby club of distinction.

I would like to wish all of our Members and Friends a most enjoyable season and
remember to consider Lansdowne as a friendly and professional location for your events
both personal and professional.

Secretary’s Report
2010/11 Season

Foreword
As you all know we achieved our objective last Saturday week in a sunny Old Belvedere
by winning the 2nd Division Championship of the AIL having achieved promotion earlier.
We dug deep and beat a committed Bruff RFC side who will join us in Division 1B next
season. At the player awards evening the beaming faces of all Lansdowne men told its
story. Congratulations to Willie and the squad for making us so proud.

In our last season at the RDS before we return to Lansdowne Road and “Aviva” we also
collected the Metropolitan cup and league double for the 4th time and went desperately
close in the Fraser McMullen all Ireland U.21 final only to lose to UCC. Four major trophies
from six teams at adult level is a wonderful achievement . It has to be said that we are
all very proud of every side that represented Lansdowne in competition this year as there
were equally good performances from J2, J3 and J4 in their cup competitions. Again we
must be doing something right and huge credit must go to all coaches and managers
who have put in place the structures to enable us to succeed. Again this is done in very
difficult circumstances due to our nomadic existence, with no home ground where we
can all be accommodated. Think of what we can achieve back in Lansdowne Road.

Again the level of support at all AIL matches has been encouraging whether home or
away. Next season we will be playing home and away fixtures against 7 opponents with
Clontarf being the only other Dublin side. So we are off on the road again and will be
asking for the same level of support at away games as the players really appreciate it.

Sadly, we record the death of past President Mick English at the end of April. Mick a
former international, Lion and senior cup winner with Lansdowne was widely known and
respected throughout Irish rugby.

Review
We won all our home AIL games in the RDS, losing just once, to Blackrock in the AIB cup.
Again the Triple Bar hosted some great nights and there will be some nostalgia leaving
there. Thanks very much to the management and staff of the RDS for accommodating us
so hospitably during the past three seasons.

The junior grounds at Ballycorus on a Sunday afternoon attracted some big crowds to
watch the U.21’s and J1’s. Saturday support for the J2 and J4 was considerably less and
we would ask that where possible members attend these matches. We look forward to
the new match standard floodlights which are currently being installed.

Training was carried out at Monkstown FC and at Irishtown and I would like to thank the
President and Executive Committee of Monkstown FC for their curtesy in accommodating
us at Sydney Parade during the season.

Mark Dawson was elected President and his cheery and smiling disposition was always
very welcome on the sidelines for all weekend matches. He was always amenable to
anyone who approached him and was courteous to all members and visitors. He proved
to be a dedicated Lansdowne man and the Executive Committee worked very well under
his leadership in what was an extremely busy season. A huge amount of work in relation
to the new clubhouse and the tendering process was achieved, a lot of which can be
attributed to Mark.

David McDowell continued as Honorary Treasurer, Michael Graham continued as

Honorary Secretary. Paddy Boylan was elected Junior Vice President in succession to
Ciaran O’Reilly who moved up to Vice President

In rugby Dermot McCarron continued as Chairman. Stephen Rooney was Director of

Senior Rugby whilst Gerry Maloney continued as Director of Junior rugby. Graham Quinn
was co opted on to the Executive committee and took over as Chairman of the Rugby
committee. John Flanagan, Ciaran O’Reilly, Rory Williams, Mark Dawson and Joe Leddin
did sterling work behind the scenes in relation to the new Lansdowne Road Clubhouse.

John Lyne was elected club captain and Willie Clancy was appointed Head Coach in
charge of the 1st XV following on from his great success with the U.21’s. Willie was
assisted by Aidan McCullen and Stephen O’Connor. Gordon D’arcy looked after the
backs and had a major input during the season. Lansdowne are very grateful for the
work put in by all on the coaching ticket this season.

Mick Quinn was 1st XV manager assisted by Brian Corrigan and Paddy Gore. Bryan O’Neill
served as Honorary fixtures secretary and Colm O’Shea continued his role as Honorary
Junior Fixtures Secretary and continued his extra responsibilities in relation to Ballycorus.
Paddy Boylan was our Leinster Branch rep in addition to being Junior Vice President.

First XV
The season started in August with a warm up game against Leinster U.20’s which we
won 10-7. The contentious ELV rules were largely shelved and we started our bid to
retain the Leinster Senior Cup. In the pool stages we had good victories over Old Wesley
and Bective but suffered defeat to Blackrock. We emerged from the pool to the playoffs
but lost to a very good St Mary’s side who were the eventual winners

The record in the cup was:

Played 4; Won 2; Lost 2; Points For 50; Against 39;

We competed in the AIB cup and having beaten Ards in the first round, extracted revenge
for last year on Nenagh Ormond with a 43-8 win in the RDS. We bowed out to a strong
Blackrock side in the RDS, losing 16-24 but our young side will have learned a lot in
appreciating the urgency and speed required in the top division of the AIL.

The AIL started in October and we had a great start to our campaign defeating Old Wesley
and Bruff away from home with try bonus victories and doing the same in our first home
game against Clonakilty. At month end we played Terenure and won 22-3 in a torrential
downpour that forced players from the pitch at one stage. In November a further win
and try bonus was picked up against Bective. The Autumn Internationals disrupted the
AIL but we had a further friendly against Bective before resuming in December. Here
we had a tough one point win over Belfast Harlequins at home before winning with a
try bonus against Corinthians. We went into the Christmas break undefeated in the AIL

having picked up 5 try bonus points from 7 matches. The first match in January against
Old Crescent was postponed due to severe weather and over the following weeks we
defeated UCD with a try bonus, TCD and Thomond (with a try bonus). We won well at
Greystones in February with a try bonus and were absolutely on fire. With 4 matches
remaining we required just one victory to guarantee promotion, but beware the Ides of
March where we just scraped victory over Highfield 3-0 at home and won in the last play
of the game 20-17 away to DLSP when Ross McCarron managed to get a try in the final
minute. In April we suffered our only defeat in the AIL going down 12-14 to a battling
Old Crescent side before going on to defeat Malone 34-28 in a highly entertaining 5
pointer last match of the season.

We finish as winners of Division 2 with 66 points from a maximum 75 on offer and are
promoted to Division 1B along with Bruff.

In the play offs to determine the champions of Division 2 we defeated DLSP 40-8 and in
the final against a highly committed Bruff side we emerged 17-10 winners. The Player
awards night later that evening was a real cause for celebration. The team have done
everything asked of them in an entertaining brand of rugby and there is great belief that
we can compete to win the AIL Division 1 championship next season.

New faces in the squad this season included Kieran Lewis and Ben Horan whilst our
leading points scorer from last year Charl Oosthuizen returned to Sth Africa having
struggled throughout the season with injury that he could not shake off. We wish Charl
and his family well for the future.

The AIL records Cup and League were:

Played 20; Won 18; Drew 0; Lost 2; Total Points for all 26 matches this season
was 677; Against 311.

The top points scorer over all matches was Dave Hewitt with 109 points. Both Matt Healy
(15) and Ross McCarron (13) broke the try scoring record in our AIL campaign and Matt
ended up as top try scorer overall with 18 tries. A total of 49 players played on the First
XV.

Our thanks are due toWillie Clancy, the Head Coach, Stephen Rooney, Director of Rugby,
Assistant Coaches Aidan McCullen , Steve O’Connor and Gordon D’Arcy and captain
John Lyne. The team management ticket of Mick Quinn, Brian Corrigan and Paddy Gore
did an immense amount of work and we are grateful for their dedication throughout
the season.

Again special thanks to Paul Clinch (Fourth Official) Bryan O’Neill (Fixtures Secretary),
Marc Smith (Fitness Coach) and the ever present Michael Cassidy (Video Cameraman). Dr
Ian Gargan carried out the medical duties and Alan Cuffe continued to man the gate for
the 14th consecutive season. PhysioDynamics provided physiotherapy services.

Second (J1) XV
The Club Second XV under the magnificent Braveheart William Wallace had a magnificent
season in wining the League and Cup double at J1 level for the fourth time in the history
of the club. (This was also our fourth consecutive Metro final). It is always difficult to
captain a second XV due to the demands higher up and the management and captain
are to be commended for blending a fabulously enthusiastic bunch of players many with
senior team experience which added a steely edge to their performances. Many of these
same players had effectively given up on the social aspects of their weekends as they had
subbed the previous day for the senior XV.

Special memories of the Metro cup campaign include solid victories over Coolmine
and Clontarf, the quarter final where we beat a fancied Seapoint after extra time on a
Saturday morning before the Scottish International, the semi final of the Metro against
Terenure out in Coolmine and the final against Garda where all our experience was
brought to the fore and we won 20-0.

The league had started rather indifferently with 2 losses from our first 3 matches.
Thereafter we were undefeated and, to me, the defining moment was a 15-15 draw
with St Mary’s a week before Christmas when we were missing some regular players. The
league title was clinched in early March with victory over Blackrock.

Congratulations to the players and management on their achievement. Special thanks to

coach Daniel O’Brien who retires this year on a high, and takes up a position as coach of
Castleknock JCT where we wish him well and hope he can fit it in with playing for our A’s
and B’s. Willie Aherne managed the side along with Jimbo Maguire and their dedication
and commitment throughout the season is greatly appreciated.

Under 20’s
Six of the U20 squad this year played for the Irish U.20 side in the summer and, more
importantly, a number played for our senior side in the AIL and Leinster championship and
acquitted themselves very well. Captained superbly by Nick Mullen this bunch of young
men did us proud and have shown great spirit and a never say die attitude throughout
their campaigns in Super Six, All Ireland Cup and McCorry cup. Whereas we did not win
any trophies we showed that on our day we could beat anyone and did, accounting for
League winners St Mary’s in the last league match of the season and again in the semi
final of the All Ireland in Templeville. We also defeated McCorry cup winners Blackrock
twice. Part of the problem is the non release of representative players which deprives
young players of the opportunity to play within their own age group.

In the Super Six, we finished third to St Mary’s in what was a tight league. Having qualified
for the All Ireland we beat UL Bohemian away 12-9 after extra time and followed up with
a 9-8 away win over St Mary’s in the semi final. The final against UCC was played in
Clonmel RFC (who we thank for their hospitality) and sadly we were on the wrong end
of a 16-10 scoreline having led for a long period. All present testified to the bravery and
attitude of the Lansdowne team that day.

We returned to play in the McCorry cup and went down to an agonising one point
defeat to Trinity 12-13 having been 13-0 down at one stage and been the victims of what
many considered an incorrect refereeing call. The manner in which this team fought back
epitomised the spirit and tenacity of the team and it is a pity that there was no silverware
at the end of the season.

Third (J2) XV
The third XV under the new coaching ticket of Graham Quinn (Beamer) and David
Quigley again had a productive league campaign finishing a respectable third of 8 in
their League and thus continue to maintain Section A status. Alan Flanagan once again
captained the side having recovered from the injury that sidelined him for much of last
year. In the cup we had a good victory over Wanderers and a close one point win over
Coolmine before succumbing to St Mary’s (the eventual winners) in the semi final by a
very close margin of 20-24.

Third A (J3) XV
Rugby like everything else moves in cycles and thus after a glorious four year period the
J3 have commenced on a re building programme. Many of the old heads have called
time on their playing careers and so it was left to captain Ed Lyons, Coaches Will Sparks
and Garret Molloy with Will also doubling up as manager to take control and rescue the
team from a nightmare start to the league. We battled on and improved as the season
settled in December and early January but not enough to challenge. We finished 7th of
8 in Section A and were thus required to play off with Old Wesley of section B to see
who would remain in section A. On a Sunday in Ballycorus and watched by a sizeable
crowd we overcame Wesley 6-0 in a thriller and thus maintained our status. In the cup
there was the welcome sight of Beamer pounding around from lineout to lineout as we
overcame Clontarf 18-16 in a gutsy display. We exited in the quarter final to Terenure
11-18 in another brave display. Dan O’Brien of J1 coaching renown played in a number

Third B (J4) XV Killer B’s

The killer B’s have continued with the exclusive Killer B’s website which they faithfully
updated weekly. Chris Reid captained the side but was unfortunate that he missed most
of the season through injury. Eoin Gantly stepped in and tapped into the expertise and
experience of coaches and managers Phil McGoldrick, Mark Dolan, Paul Smith. The team
was coached by Mark Dolan and Paul Smith. We finished 3rd of 7 in our league pool and
in the second round of the cup we lost to Clontarf. An observation made is that when
teams withdraw from leagues at a higher level the influx of players on teams lower down
creates an unfair imbalance to existing J4 teams.

Both the A’s and B’s combined team also lost the annual match to Scottish visitors Madras
FP by an obscure score that nobody remembers. The J4’s also enjoyed a trip to Toulouse
over the weekend. Reports are that the match was played and there was another obscure
score before all returned safely.

J2 Season Report 2009-2010

After two frustrating seasons at 3rds level, the 2009-2010 season saw the 3rds bounce
back with a successful season, although ultimately falling short of winning a trophy. Full
credit to the turnaround of the J2’s must go to Graham Quinn and David Quigley who’s
excellent coaching, constant dedication and total commitment facilitated a revival of the
3rds into a competitive squad.

The league season began ominously with the 3rds suffering a heavy defeat at the
hands of strong Old Belvedere team, followed with a very close 9-6 loss to ultimate
league winners Clontarf. However, with the tireless efforts of Beamer and Quigs and a
squad determined to improve, the 3rds went on a four game winning streak registering
wins against Terenure, St. Mary’s, Old Belvo and Blackrock. This put the 3rds firmly in
contention for the league, but needing to beat Clontarf away to go into first position.
Unfortunately, a strong ‘Tarf outfit put paid to any hopes the J2’s had of winning the
league.

After Christmas, the focus turned firmly towards winning the cup, with a strong belief in
the squad that bringing back the first cup at 3rds since 1999 was possible. After a strong
win against Wanderers, and a closely fought quarter-final win against Coolmine, a third
matchup against Mary’s beckoned in the semi-final. Up 13-6 prior to halftime, Mary’s
pulled back to 13-12 by the break. In the second half, Lansdowne went up by 8 points,
only to watch Mary’s chip away before losing 24-20.

Although a disappointing end to the season, in hindsight, and having regard to the
situation at 3rds for the prior two seasons, the season must be viewed as an overall
success. Competing for the league, and narrowly losing in the semi-final of the cup gives
the 3rds a great foundation entering next season to bring some silverware to the club.
Thanks to Quigs, Beamer and all the squad for their tireless dedication and efforts during
the season.

Tag Rugby
Paul Clinch again organised and monitored the Tag sides of Lansdowne Longhorns
and Lansdowne Legends. Again both of these teams were successful in their respective
competitions with the Longhorns winning their league section but suffered defeat to St
Mary’s in the playoffs but nevertheless finished in third place.

The Legends won the IRFU Mens Veteran League and the V Cup (Heineken Cup
equivalent) remaining undefeated throughout the season for the 3rd year in a row.

The more cultured Lansdowne Lightning under Frans Van Cauwelaert assisted by Dan
McCartney (son in law of ‘the Ghost’ Corrigan) participated in the IRFU Summer Tag
league and stuck very much with the values of ‘participation’. Despite a few notable wins
and reaching play off stage, no silverware was collected but they enjoyed themselves and
have vowed to continue.

Mini Rugby - Nurturing The X Box Generation

Let’s get one thing straight from the get go ……….there is nothing mini about Mini
Rugby!

On a rough count there are almost twice as many kids playing rugby as the rest of the
club put together! That’s around 250 kids compared to around 130 playing members
from the Under 20s to the Third Bs.

That’s 250 kids wearing the Lansdowne colours every Sunday, 250 kids who think they
will play for Ireland some day, and 250 kids looking for hot chocolate after training!!!

As one of the six coaches to the Under 10s last season I learned that the hot chocolate
phenomenon is just one of many radical developments that has occurred since Kilgobbin
was last graced with my presence!

It’s a brave new world out there and Mini Rugby coaches need to develop their skill sets
to new and previously unheard of levels in order to keep harmony in the camp. Bribery
and hot chocolate are only the start ……..

Let me explain……………..

It is late December. There is a blanket of sleet blowing horizontally across the ankle deep
mud that makes up the pitches in Bird Avenue. It’s 9.30 on a Sunday morning and our
bedraggled coaching crew are knocking back Solpadine in the car-park.

Our opposition, Navan RFC, have arrived early and have what looks like around 40 kids
doing drills at the far end of the pitch although it is hard to tell through the sleet. Our
boys are arriving in dribs and drabs and let’s just say are not exactly chomping at the bit.
In fact most of them are refusing to get out of the cars!

We seem a bit light on numbers and texts are flooding in from parents who looked out
the window and decided it would be cruel to children to send Little Johnnie out in that
weather.

75
www.lansdownerugby.com
Lansdowne F.C. Yearbook 2010/11

Panic begins to descend on the coaches. Frantic counter texting gets underway to bolster
our numbers while one of us is dispatched across the pitch to assure the Navan coaches
that all is well and we should be looking good in about 10 minutes. (Yeah right!)

About 20 minutes later we manage to cobble together 3 teams of 7 a side with no subs
while the Navan boys have around 5 subs per team!

The seven boys I’m in charge of are showing all the enthusiasm of small nuns at a penguin
shoot.

We pull them together, get them to link arms and lead them into a rousing chorus of
GIVE ME AN L ………… GIVE ME AN A………

By the time we get to the E we are looking at a couple of quivering lower lips and within
5 minutes, three of out our seven lads are officially crying!! One of our coaches looks
like he is going to cry himself as he informs me through gritted teeth ….‘ I don’t have
the skill set for this’.

We regroup and hot chocolate is mentioned for the first time. It seems to do the trick but
at half time one of our charges makes a beeline for the car-park.

Six a side just wasn’t going to work and on closer inspection it transpired that the missing
player was none other than Lombard Junior!

( I don’t know where he picked up the habit of bailing out when the going got
tough!)   Anyway, I was immediately dispatched to the car-park by my fellow coaches
with clear instructions to do ‘whatever it took’ to get him back on the pitch!

A brief and brutal negotiation took place that I came out the worst of. Our errant player
did indeed return to the fray but several weeks later a shiny new X Box arrived at the
Lombard house. I will always deny that the two incidents were related but nobody’s
buying it!

And so, as I said at the outset the skill set required for Mini Rugby Coaching goes way
beyond knowing how do a good ‘skip one’ !

76
www.lansdownerugby.com
Lansdowne F.C. Yearbook 2010/11

You need to combine the skills of Mother Theresa, Butras Butras Gali, Donald Trump and
Mussolini and you are about half way there.

On top of all this there is a whole new lingo that wasn’t around in the Kilgobbin years.
Ball retention, turnovers, body positioning and off loads are now par for the course and
we are required to transfer this knowledge as if we were reared on it!

God knows what the Under 11s will bring.

I need a lie down.

Anyone for hot chocolate?

John Lombard
Lansdowne U 10s.

Best Wishes to Lansdowne F.C.

The Irish World Cup Rugby Challenge

& the Irish Rugby Football Union
Charitable Trust.
It is a sad fact of everyday life that people suffer personal injuries through accidents
in their homes, workplaces, on the streets and roads and also in the pursuit of leisure
activities and sports. In this regard Rugby Football is no different from any other contact
sport and unfortunately player injuries occur and from time to time such injuries can be
of a serious nature, resulting in permanent disability in some cases.

The Irish Rugby Football Union Charitable Trust was formed in 1978 to assist seriously
injured rugby players in their everyday lives, and help to restore their confidence and
independence.

The Trust Fund has grown over the years through direct grants and the Irish Rugby

Bill Moynan 1948
Lansdowne F.C. Yearbook 2010/11

Canon William John Moynan 1920-2009

Lansdowne Football Club lost one of its great members when Bill Moynan died last year.
Educated at King’s Hospital School, where he excelled at rugby and cricket. He was on
the senior cup team for four years (a prop forward) captain in 1938, and was a schools
interpro. A very fine cricketer, he captained the team to win the senior cup in 1938 and
was also a schools interpro.

Bill entered Trinity College in 1938, and did his Divinity Degree. He was ordained in 1944.
His first parish was Chapilizod/North Strand, then Portarlington and then Donabate/
Swords (rector).

He had a most successful sporting career while at Trinity. He played for six years on the 1st
XV and was captain of the club. In 1944 he was picked on the Irish XV against the British
Army at Ravenhill, Belfast. At cricket he played five seasons on the 1st X1 and was twice
captain, in 1942 when they won the senior cup, and in 1944.

Bill joined Lansdowne in 1944, and retained his place on the 1st XV until 1951. He was
captain in 1948, won two senior cup medals - 1949/1950 and was President of the club
when they won the senior cup in 1971 (captain Eddie Kiely)

After University, he joined Clontarf Cricket Club and played on the 1st team for many
years. He was captain of the club and won a senior cup medal in 1950 - a Leinster
interpro, he was generally considered unlucky not to be selected for Ireland.

In later years Bill attended Lansdowne Past Presidents functions and he also instigated
the annual ecumenical service of remembrance for deceased members of the club and
their families.

Bill was a devoted family man. We extend our sincerest sympathy to his widow Rose and
his children Peter, Anne and Wendy.

He was truly a good man. May he rest in peace.

In the words of a certain newly fathered ex killer bees prop

“plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose”

The more things change, the more they stay the same…

This was, in many ways, a typical killer bees season, filled with highs and lows, with lots
of laughter and a few cross words, but ultimately unfruitful.

Once again the squad was coached by the dynamic duo of Mark Dolan and Paul Smith,
veterans at this stage of dealing with the ronaldo-esque demands of some of the elite
squad members who had clearly been in high octane training camps over the summer
months. Mark and Pauls attitude was a simple one: If youre a good player get better, if
youre not a good player get good. Upon reflection they were probably more successful
at the second part than the first as we saw a number of what would be deemed fringe
players take the step up during the season.

Captain was unanimously voted as team stalwart and man about town Chris Reid, a man
who doesn’t do backward steps. Chris has never played a match that he hasn’t given
100% and he was an obvious choice to lead the team. However it was as soon as he was
told of the ‘captains curse’ that his commitment got a bit shaky… Unfortunately due to a
constant niggling bollock injury, Chris spent much of the time on the sideline this season.
He was ably deputised by vice Captain Eoin Gantly and Rob Moore.

Our season kicked off with a friendly against Daragh Fallons Navan RFC, followed by
a sausage, a sherry and a quick game of gin rummy before retiring to the gym for a
warmdown before bed… Much fun was had and we look forward to the return leg this
season.

The league opener against Greystones was, to put it mildly, a game of two halves…
To lose a match having been so far ahead at half time would be the first signs of the
problems that would manifest itself throughout the season, poor decision-making and

the lack of an old head or two. Following this disappointment was a terrible match
against AIB in the mire of DCU. I swear at one stage the rain was falling upwards! All
of a sudden the season looked in jeapordy until a hard fought win against a committed
Stillorgan side put things back on track. Our old foes Barnhall put manners back on us
the week after, lest we get carried away however.. Wins against monkstown and AIB put
us back up in the right part of the league, but the killer bees had to settle for 3rd place in
the league which was a good bit away from our intended target of promotion courtesy
of an end of season spanking by greystones.

Ultimately it would be our attempts to stop Barnhall winning the league that would
probably inspire our best performance on the last day of the league in Ballycorus, but even
this would not stop the Barnhall steamroller who thoroughly deserved their promotion.
Thank god we wont have to play them next year! One cannot help but wonder what
would have happened if Smithy had been wearing Jeffs sticky gloves…

This season saw a tie in with the Castleknock College teachers team who played 2 games
against us during the season. Hopefully that strong bond will continue this season as
many of our new recruits came from here. It must be noted that the muinteori gave us a
hiding on both occasions….

There was also a pre-christmas under30s V over30s game of 7s up in snowy Ballycorus

which certainly gave us an appetite for our turkey, although I do believe the team
manager was unfairly singled out for some rough treatment… but at least I, unlike the
coach, lasted more than 5 minutes !

The first round of the cup was a big ask against a much fancied Clontarf side, and
ultimately it would be a bridge too far despite a very credible performance. Too much
talent and wisdom saw ‘Tarf come out on top. If I have a wish for this season it would be
that we would not let our performances drop under that level for every game…

The end of season tour to Toulouse was a rip roaring success by all accounts, information
is still a little sketchy at time of writing….. I believe the match was a closely fought affair,
ending 15-12 or something like that, if only they had taken that kick… Special mention
must go to Smithy and Big Kev McDermott who completed their 127th killer bees tour
in a row.

And so to the end of season accolades on a balmy final night in RDS, honours scarfs were
presented to Robert Moore our barnstorming 2nd row, and Ross Bloomfield, our tough
northern centre. Ties were presented to Peter “hall of fame” Geoghegan, Millan “most

We said our goodbyes to the triple bar and we said farewell to Sydney parade. The big
move back to HQ makes me giddy with anticipation. Perhaps it will bring a new found
vigour to our quest for silverware.

The Flanders Tens Tour 2010 By Will Sparks

“You’ll meet each other in the street in 30 years

time and there will just be a look. And you’ll know
just how special some days in your life are.”
Ian McGeechan

The 22 noble Lansdowne men that competed in 2010 Flanders Tens will forever have
that ‘look’.

The tour began with a day of culture in Amsterdam. An 11am tour of the Heineken
brewery was a truly fascinating look at the ins and outs of the brewing process. Other
tourists and brewery staff were only too happy to be serenaded by the first of many arias
delivered by the Lansdowne choir. One Japanese tourist in particular took a particular
shining to the Lansdowne CBC Monkstown duo of Johnny Collins and Mark Tuthill.
After further cultural musings in Amsterdam including a Craig David singalong, we had
a smooth bus journey to the Belgian rugby Mecca; Dendermonde, where the real magic
would begin.

After an evening spent meeting and greeting the other athletes which included
competitors in the ladies competition, (Mick Sheehy showed a particular interest in this
competition) it was down to the real business of playing champagne rugby. A fine
vintage of Lansdowne rugby was popped open with three wins out of three on day one.
The creative axis of Shane Gahan, John Sparks, Mark “Face” Quinn and Mark Tuthill were
given a perfect platform by self-confessed ‘10s Specialist’ Paul Grant, David Soden, Dave
Tunney and Ciaran “C.J. Manda-linde”. Notable mention also to Lansdowne debutant
Stephen Ryan and rookie Big Paul O’Brien.

That evening the squad discovered our very own home-away-from-home, the Flanders
Lansdowne clubhouse which also doubled as a courtroom for that evening lead by a
judicial panel of Ed Lyons, Paul Grant and yours truly. Unfortunately for defendants,
North Korean courts are known to be more lenient. The youngest member of the squad,

93
www.lansdownerugby.com
Lansdowne F.C. Yearbook 2010/11

Charlie “Cavo” Campbell was given the tough task of minding the 23rd “member”
and mascot of our squad “Tyler” throughout the tour. The court did not take kindly to
Cavo’s shoddy custodian duties and poor taste in fashion, thus he was duly punished.
Echoes of “HE MUST RESIGN!!” can still be heard in corners of the make-do clubhouse.
For the evening’s festivities the organisers had set an unusual theme of “Ice Age”. The
Lansdowne ironic twist of Hawaiian shirts and floral leis were a big hit but did leave the
locals a little puzzled. Fuelled by local Aldi beer and unrivalled tour savoir faire your heroes
continued to mix with fellow athletes into the wee hours. Johnny Collins welcomed
his friend ‘Henry’ to the group as if he were there all along, however in Clark Kent
fashion we never did see them in the same room at the same time. James Caslin also
continued his cultural quest for knowledge by bumping into Malcolm O’Kelly’s Belgian
sister. Unfortunately Tyler didn’t last the distance as his tour ended that evening after a
misunderstanding with Johnny Collins.

A fresh 9am kickoff welcomed our undefeated heroes to the second day’s rugby. Shaking
off the night before, Lansdowne quickly learned that you can’t ease yourself into a street
fight and had to settle for a high scoring draw. The second game of the day was a low-
point played against the ready and super enthusiastic local team; Dendermonde. With
a pitch reminiscent of a sandpit from Bettystown, Lansdowne struggled to regain their
form or sobriety showed the day before. This unfortunately ended all hopes of taking
home the 29th best trophy in world rugby back to HQ. With one game remaining it
looked like we could only play for pride but little did the tournament know what lay
ahead.

In golf, the British Open is known purely as “The Open” due to its magnitude and
importance that it holds within the sport. That day, Sunday the 23rd of May 2010, we
had the privilege of taking part in “The Game”.

Making an iconic one-time-only return to the rugby field was captain for the day, high
commissioner and ambassador of pain; Johnny Collins. Minutes before The Game,
Lansdowne’s only half-Belgian-half-crazy alacadoo Paul “Vanner” Van Cauweleart
arrived to support the cause wearing the 1922 Lansdowne Supporters uniform and it
began. Even with your writer’s classic education and penchant for fine rhetoric and prose,
it is hard to give The Game justice in the written form. Never has the expression “you
had to be there” been more apt. Grid Iron passes, outrageous swerving runs, JC victims,

supporter pitch invasions, jaw dropping moves and a 50 yard drop goal by Face are just
the tip of the iceberg that was The Game. The gallery grew in size as word got around
that the Lansdowne Club from Dublin were reinventing the sport. Hearts and minds were
won over instantly with the spectacular that was transpiring on the fields of Flanders
forever to be known there as “Het Spel”. History will say that Lansdowne lost but you can
ask anyone that was in Dendermonde that day and they will say otherwise.

While it would be the end of Lansdowne’s Flanders 10s, another night of revelry would
top off a momentous tour. An awards night and sing-song back in the “clubhouse”
brought us to the closing party in fine fettle. Again, Lansdowne’s interaction with the
other athletes was an example to any touring party. Furthermore Mick Sheehy’s support
and interest in the ladies game was again a credit to the club.

They say that you have hit rock bottom when you have to share a tent with 22 other men.
For those lucky enough to have been part of that tent in Flanders it was our zenith. The
tour embodied what Lansdowne is about. It is this level of camaraderie that so many of
us are drawn to wear the Red, Yellow and Black every week regardless of school, college,
occupation and even ability. Every one of us feels a little more Lansdowne than we did
before the tour and we will forever have that ‘Look’ that Ian McGeechan speaks of.

A big thanks to Mary Walsh, Alan Benson, Ciaran O’Reilly, Dermot McCarron, Michael
Graham, Paul Grant, Beamer, Ed Lyons, Andy Tallon, Dave Upton and Justin Meagher for
all help and organisation. Thanks to the club for all their support. Role on Flanders 2011

Lansdowne mini and Youth rugby 2009/10

Despite been washed out in November and frozen solid in January, it was a great season
for the Minis. We fielded teams from U6 to U15 through a total of 250 registered players
with some mini sides fielding 2 or 3 teams.

The season started in September in the CUS grounds in Bird Ave. with a visit of the
Heineken cup through ex Mini. Luke Fitzgerald and Devin Toner.

The registration of players was carried out by an army of volunteers under the expert
eyes of Ingrid Tidey who did a magnificent job to comply with all the Leinster Branch
paperwork.

The age rating changed this year to the calendar year effectively causing last years
groupings to be split in two. Whilst this caused headaches administratively, an army of
50 coaches helped out in assisting the transition. We certified 10 coaches at Mini level
and a further 4 at Foundation level. One of the benefits of the new age rules was that
players made more new friends in their groups.

Ray Carroll acted as Leinster Branch rep and fixtures secretary and did a great job of
juggling pitches and times with ease and aplomb. Ulla McCarthy Callahan acted as Child
welfare officer and ensured that the Irish Red Cross had a first aider, the bright and
colourful Shirley, on site each week. Pat Moran was in charge of kit sales.

The Lansdowne Executive is very grateful to Conor Shaw who is chairman of mini rugby
and his team for the enormous amount of work put in this season in nurturing the talent
for future years and for organising mini rugby games to be played at each of our home
matches of the AIL.. Thanks are also due to Kevin Jennings and Stephen Tonge, the
Marist fathers and our friends in CUS for their hospitality and generosity in allowing us
use Bird Ave.

The annual Minis lunch was held in the Four Seasons on 9 April. Over 200 attended and
thanks are due to Derry Shaw and Eleanor Connolly for organising. The end of season
party was a monster BBQ in Ballycorus were awards and medals were presented. The
Minis eagerly await return to Lansdowne Road next season.

Richard Tobin – Ten new coaches volunteered and this group played a form of Tag to
develop running, handling and avoidance skills..

U.8 Co Ordinators- Michael O’Brien, Tom Coman, Andrew Cree- Concentrated on

tackling and played well in the non competitive Belvedere Blitz.

U.9 Co Ordinators- Dave Colbert, Derry Shaw, Conor Lynch- The largest grouping of 45
players

U.10 Co Ordinators- Ray Hernan, John Lombard,Ollie O’Brien, John Coman, Mylo Carey,
Declan Fassbender, - Travelled to Kilkenny where they won 7 and drew 1 of their matches
making many new friends in Kilkenny and Waterpark.

U.11 Co Ordinators- Paul McCabe, Mark Ryan, Conor Smith, Pat Moran- Played in end
of season Kettle cup blitz in Kilkenny

U.12 Co Ordinators- Eugene O’Rourke, Mark McMahon, Ciaran Lynch, Andrew Curry,
Paul Murphy Vincent Ryan, Conor Shaw- Early season training included a session with
Luke Fitzgerald and Jonathan Sexton. Two teams were entered in the Metro league but
were disrupted through cancellations due to weather conditions. The A team are Metro
league champions having gone through the season undefeated in 13 games scoring
99 tries. The A’s also won the O’Daly Cup Blitz in Athy The B team were particularly
hit by weather and only played a few matches and had some memorable wins. A few
clubs continue to put out strong teams at B’s level and this results in mis-matches. The
highlight of the season was the rescue of Mylo Carey’s dog by the Wicklow Mountain
rescue service after she had fallen 300feet when out on a fund raiser for the U.12’s trip
to Basque country. Unfortunately the trip was deferred to October due to volcanic ash.

U.13 Co Ordinators- Liam Mulcahy, Liam O’Flynn, Paul Healy – The transition to the new
age group did not help but the team stuck with it and the squad of 19 players completed
all their matches in the fifteen man game.

U.14/15 Co Ordinators- Fergus Aherne, Dave Bradley, Noel Downer, Harry Rogers –
Players are drawn from Gonzaga, St Michael’s and Blackrock as well as non rugby playing
schools all of whom showed great skill when up against many squads that considerably
outnumbered them.

We Go Home
As we leave our mark at the RDS and return “Home” to our beloved Lansdowne Road
and the New Stadium, it is a good time to reflect for a moment on the past year.

Without a clubhouse, without a base for a number of years, and split facilities for the
club members! Yet despite all these hardships, successive Presidents and committees in
that period, the players and coaches have pulled together in such a way that Lansdowne
moves back stronger than before. I believe we will embrace this exciting time with great
enthusiasm to drive the club forward into a bright and positive future.

I was once asked why I joined Lansdowne when I left school. For me it was a simple and
practical decision:

A I wanted to play for Leinster and Ireland

B I didn’t want to join a “School-backed”club, with an “old boys” scenario.

C I wanted to play on Lansdowne Road regularly

D I wanted to be with a consistently competitive and successful club.

E I wished to be in a rugby club that had a wide mix of members from all areas of
the country and from a wide range of backgrounds

I have never doubted, for one minute, that I was correct in my choice of Lansdowne.

Season 2009 – 2010

I believe last season can be summed up pretty well in the form of English soccer punditry
- “The lads done well”!

The first XV were motivated and hungry under the excellent calm and totally common
sense approach of Coach Willie Clancy and his able side-kick Stephen O’Connor. With
expert input and guidance from player-coach Aidan McCullen and International Gordon
D’Arcy and Head of Rugby Stephen Rooney the “Square Ball” and “mind your house”
attitude was instilled in all members of a competitive squad.

The “lad” John Lyne led from the front and ably assisted by the experienced and
consistent Kieran Lewis leading the backline, the building blocks were firmly in place and
all our home league games at the RDS were won. I must say the pitch surface at the RDS
is at least on a par with the best in the country.

Manager Brian”muds a great leveller” Corrigan and “Boy Wonder” Paddy Gore did a
superb job as always. The players have trouble keeping up with Paddy’s grooming on
nights out, Even the “shapers” like Brian O’Riordan, Dave Kearney, Dippy Ryan, “the
boy” Healy, Justin Meagher, Trevor Coneely, Willie Earle and the working – girls “ Tom
Cruise, Neilus Keogh from Bruff with his wide angled ass, threw jealous glances at the “
gelled-up “ and heavily “ after-shaved bucko Gore.

“Billy Whizz” Healy bagged 15 tries and “green machine” Ross McCarron had 13.
Not bad considering rugby is their third love in life after chess and debating. The other
Gonzaga boy Stuart McCarron didn’t feature as much due to a long injury lay-off.

Good news, Willie Wallace, captain of the great second XV double cup and league
winning team, got engaged to Nikki, the lovely daughter of Ireland’s greatest flanker,
Fergus Slattery. Slatts will be “sick as a parrot” at the thought of all those “flying flankers”
that will be produced for Lansdowne in the future.

The camaraderie and competitiveness between the squad was significant in ensuring
the success of both First XV and Second XV. It is an exceptional season when the 1st
team gets promoted and wins the League Championship and then the 2nds achieve
the Double, under the astute guidance of Coach Dan O’Brien and ably assisted by Willie
Aherne and Jimbo Maguire, a competitive group kept pressure on the Firsts.

Add to that the superb performance of the U-21’s in getting to the All-Ireland Final where
they lost narrowly to UCC. A brilliant effort by Nick Mullen and his team, ably driven by
my brother Charlie Quinn and Declan Fassbender. Alan Twomey was the Alex Ferguson
of the young guns with David O’Mahoney and John Kearney. Congratulations to Alan
on his elevation to Leinster U-21’s manager.

This means that there will be plenty of young players pushing to be on the Firsts Squad
and Willie Clancy has a great reputation for bringing young players through.

Congratulations also to Caleb Powell who carries on a proud tradition in Lansdowne

of Presidency of the IRFU. And well done to my old team-mate and Leinster wing Mick
Kearney on his elevation to manager of the Ireland U-20 Squad.

A little bit of thanks

1 Dermot McCarron for his calm influence on the Club

2 Mark Dawson, a brilliant President

3 Ciaran O’Reilly, a deserving President incoming, there’s no doubt,

“Caesar will Rule”

4 Paddy Halpenny, his heart is the soul of this great club.

5 Paddy “if there’s one team I hate” Boylan, for his sound
“feet on the ground” advice.

6 Butch Cassidy for his filming, and much, much more

7 Dr Ian Gargan for his time and effort on behalf of the team

8 Our physios (or as Moss Keane used to say Fizzios) Garreth Farrell,
Avril Barrett and Sarah Brady, for their effort, support and care.

9 Mary Walsh and Eleanor Connolly for brilliantly keeping the club in touch
and together over the last few turbulent years. Great job girls.

New Clubhouse
The committee of Joe Leddin, Rory Williams, Ciaran O’Reilly, Mark Dawson, Dermot
McCarron, John Flanagan, Kieran Mulligan, Paddy and Dave Madigan, Mahon Murphy
and David McDowell have expertly handled our move back to Lansdowne Road. Because
of them, our club will have the finest facilities in Ireland and our First XV league matches
will take place at the Aviva Stadium main pitch.

Every Lansdowne member can be justly proud of the way this group handled complex
negotiations with the IRFU, and should thank the IRFU for keeping rugby in Lansdowne
Road, and we look forward to a bright future at what I consider to be the most beautiful
sports arena in the world.

On a sad note
We will miss the bright and lively presence of one of our greatest players, and most
respected member, Mick English. In my first season in Lansdowne, 1970, I played on the
third XV. My scrum-half was Tony Twomey, now a life-long friend and great support, and
at full-back we had the effervescent Mick English, 80 minutes of chatter, he was just
unbelievable. We won the cup that year, a good follow-on for John Kerins, Tim Kennedy
(RIP), Jim O’Meara and me from our schools cup win that year with Newbridge. Mick
was” flying it” late that night at Captain Peter “Polly” Kieran’s apartment, and he threw
the plinth of the cup across the room. My head got in the way, and the only sober guy
on the team got 6 stitches for his trouble.

When I visited Mick not long ago at his home, his lovely wife Pauline and I laughed when
he told me “you drove me to drink”! I wonder what he meant??

Ronnie Walsh, a genuine fun guy who played out-half for a short spell with Lansdowne
some years ago, also passed away. And Ian Storrar, who captained our J4 boys in 2000-
2001, has also left us. May they stock the Lansdowne Bar in heaven.

Goodbyes
Charl Oosthuisen has left for South Africa after an injury ravaged season. He was league
top scorer in 2008- 2009. And we wish him and his wife Ilse, Zander and Ricard the best
of luck in the future. Danny Marquez has also headed home to Spain and he also goes
with our best wishes.

Finally
Congratulations to Martin Murphy (Stadium Director, Aviva Stadium) and his team on
the great achievement of producing a fantastic stadium on time and under budget. Well
Done!!

Golden Oldies (Vets)

Thanks to Phil McGoldrick Lansdowne, after a long absence entered a team in the
Leinster Vets league with the idea of having fun without the necessity to train. Winter
weather badly disrupted the programme and of the seven teams involved, each had only
two or three matches. Lansdowne only managed one game losing to Bective, (the overall
winners) by 7-11. The result was close enough to indicate possibilities of what might be
and so it is hoped to continue next season.

Starring roles were observed from nostalgic names from the past with a poetic ring to
them Cuffey, Slugger, Drummer, Hermanator, Starry and Smithy. Due to calls from other
sides within the club no team was entered in the cup competition for vets.

Haiti Report by David Moore

Following the devastating earthquake of January the 12th 2010 in Haiti a group of Irish
orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses visited the country to assist in the care of
those injured. Lansdowne member David Moore was involved in the setting up of the Irish
Orthopaedic Haiti Fund. The planning of the venture to Haiti involved the organisation of
the medical teams to travel, co-ordinating the donations of both money and equipment
and the logistics of insuring that the trip to Haiti succeeded. It quickly became apparent
that the organisation of all these elements was extremely demanding and time consuming
for the medics involved. John Kearney, former president of Lansdowne FC offered his
services and became immersed in the organisation of the trip.

Donations were received from many sources including medical supply companies,
hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and individuals. Great thanks are due to all the
Lansdowne members and members of the wider rugby community who contributed
financially to supporting the trip to Haiti. Mark Dawson, President of Lansdowne FC,
arranged that the proceeds of a raffle at one of the pre-international lunches were
donated to the Irish Orthopaedic Haiti Fund.

The first multi disciplinary team of Irish orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses,
physiotherapists and support staff went to Haiti in early February. They were based in
Cange, a small hospital approximately 60 kilometres from Port-Au- Prince. Dave Moore
and John Kearney were part of this team. Since that time numerous other teams of
doctors and nurses have travelled to Haiti to work in Cange Hospital, supported by the
Irish Orthopaedic Haiti Fund. The Irish orthopaedic surgeons have now formed what will
hopefully be a permanent link with Partners in Health an American organisation who are
presently building a new hospital just outside Port-Au- Prince. It is anticipated that the
Irish Orthopaedic Haiti Fund will continue to provide care to those who were injured in
the earthquake. The nature of the treatment required has changed as the injuries heal.
As a country Haiti is destitutionally poor and the general population does not have access
to high quality orthopaedic care. The plan is that the Irish Orthopaedic Haiti Fund will
provide this care on a shared basis in the future.

In Memoriam - The Passing of the Lansdowne Lions

Mick English
Bohemians, Lansdowne, Munster and British & Irish Lions

Mick English was an established hero of Munster Rugby when he joined Lansdowne.
A prodigious kicker and drop-goal specialist, he was the first International from the
Bohemian Club and revered as out-half for Munster, particularly in a great performance
against the All Blacks in 1963, a game Munster lost narrowly 6-3.

He was honoured to be the man to replace the great Jack Kyle on the Irish Team in 1958
and was only to pass on the mantle when mercurial Mike Gibson came along. Mick was
capped on 16 occasions for Ireland and was deservedly selected for the Lions Tour to
Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Unfortunately he was injured early in the tour and,
as a student he took his time coming home; arriving after the Lions had completed an
arduous three and half month tour.

His outgoing personality was a joy to behold and people were drawn to him in company.
He was also great fun on the pitch, remembering that rugby was, in fact, a pastime,
something to be thoroughly enjoyed. He enjoyed it and as a result, thousands of others
did too, on and off the field. His delightful encouragement to young players in Lansdowne
was truly inspirational.

One story that is regaled world- wide was when Ireland were defeated by a late try by
the side-stepping Phil Horrocks-Taylor of England at Twickenham. Mick was the last Irish
defender to be left prone on the ground after the Englishman’s great run, when quizzed
in the dressing room after the game, during a heated debate, Mick said it was simple
enough, “Horrocks went one way, Taylor went the other and I was left holding the
bloody hyphen” Good on ya Mickey !!.

His kind presence will be sorely missed in Lansdowne as a former President of the club
and as friend to so many.

Our love and condolences go to his wonderful wife Pauline, his daughter Michelle and
to his sons Conor and John.

Dr Barry Bresnihan
UCD, Lansdowne, Munster, Ireland & British and Irish Lions.
Dr Barry Bresnihan was renowned in the medical world as much as he was a star on the
rugby field. He learned his rugby at Gonzaga College, and went to UCD to study medicine
and excelled in all areas of his life. He became a Professor at St.Vincents Hospital and
became a world authority on rheumatology.

He represented UCD, Lansdowne and Munster with honour and was capped 25 times
for Ireland, scoring five tries. He was selected for the Lions in 1966 in Australia and New
Zealand and in 1968 in South Africa where he played in all three Tests.

It is very easy to forget the human side when we list so many achievements but Barry was
also known for his unassuming nature, which often hid a very witty side to his personality.

His greatest love was for his lovely wife Valerie and his daughters Niamh, Ciara and
Lia and his son Rory, and he will be greatly missed by them as well as his colleagues in
medicine and his friends in rugby. A truly “gentle” Gentleman.

Rev Robin Roe

CBE, MC, MA, QHC, Trinity College, Lansdowne, London Irish, Ireland , British & Irish Lions 1955
Many were saddened on hearing of the passing of Rev. Robin Roe of Ballybrophy
Co.Laois, who had resided in England for many years carrying out his Ministerial duties.

Robin was a well liked man, who was a very talented hooker for Lansdowne and Ireland.
He was capped on 21 occasions between 1951 and 1957. A wonderful conversationalist,
who had many interesting and witty stories to tell about his rugby experience.

He passed away, peacefully, aged 81 in Guildford in Surrey on the 18th July 2010. A well
attended memorial service was held in St Patrick’s Church of Ireland in Mountrath on
August 15th 2010 when many of his friends and colleagues got together to remember
a great rugby man.
