Internet Protocol (IP)

1. The Internet Protocol (IP) is the
principle comm. protocol used for
relaying datagrams (packets) across an
internetwork using the Internet Protocol
Suite.

2. For this purpose, IP defines addressing

methods and structures for datagram
encapsulation.
3

Requirement of IP
1)COMPATIBILITY

2)TRANSPARENCY

3)EFFICIENCY

4)SECURITY
4

Portable IP and Mobile IP

Why Mobile IP?

1) Need a protocol which allows network
connectivity across host movement.

2) Protocol to enable mobility must not

require massive changes to router
software.

3)Confine changes to mobile hosts and a

few support hosts which enable mobility.
6

Care of address and home address

9

Mobile IP- Operation

1.Sending and Receiving Packets

2. Discovering the care of address

3. Registering the care-of address

4. Tunneling to the care-of address

Advantages

1)COST

2)MOBILITY

3)FEATURES
Disadvantages

1)QUALITY OF SERVICES

2)INTERNET REQUIREMENT

3)ELECTRICITY
Security in Mobile IP

1) Confirming can be performed by all

parties.
– Only authentication between MN and
HA is required.

2) HA and FA do not have to share any

security information.
13

Applications
1)FOUND IN WIRED AND WIRELESS
ENVIRONMENTS(e.g., IP over DVB,
WLAN).

2)USE IN 3G SYSTEMS.
14

Conclusions...
• Great potential for mobile application
deployment using Mobile IP

• Minimizes impact on existing Internet

infrastructure.

• Security issues are important.
