The law and order situation in Rawalpindi
during last two years has gone from bad to
worse, with thieves, carjackers, burglars,
robbers and other street criminals having a
field day.

Citizens are concerned about the situation but

mostly they are worried about the indifferent
attitude of police.
Gangsters are continuously challenging
security measures taken by the city police.

A number of incidents are reported with
police while so many remain unregistered
because of the ‘thana culture’.
Outlaws persons commit crimes without any
hesitation even in day light, holding family
members hostage or confining them in a room
at gunpoint.

The daring robbery in the jurisdiction of New

Town Police station on September 15 is just the
tip of the iceberg.

Four armed men stormed into the house of a
property dealer in Satellite Town’s F-Block by
scaling the boundary wall at about 12:15 p.m.
and made good their escape with 8,000
British pounds and Rs.0.2 million in cash.
They also took away 700 grams of gold
ornaments worth about Rs.2.5 million.

A frustrated Raja Shabbir owner of house said

that he did not expect any help from police as
they were not cooperating with him to get
hold of robbers.

City Police Officer (CPO) Rawalpindi Fakhar
Sultan when contacted said he just joined
office and he is very much aware of his
responsibilities, on the other side
Superintendent of Police (SP) Rawal Town
Zaraat Kayani when contacted refuses to
comment on the issue.
Violent street crimes, robberies and dacoities
are a plague for society. Such crimes need to be
fought ruthlessly and aggressively but as long
as police officials are appointed and posted out
of merit, this sorry state is bound to persist.
