The TRUTH ABOUT

The

GODHEAD.
I know that from the light that God has given me that there
should be a revival of the messages that have been given in the
past.” . . . (1906, MR760, pg31)

“The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to

His people through Elders Waggoner and Jones. This message was to
bring more prominently before the people the uplifted Saviour, the
sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. It presented justification
through faith in the Surety; it invited the people to receive the
righteousness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience to all
the commandments of God. Many had lost sight of Jesus. They
needed to have their eyes directed to His divine person, His merits
and His changeless love for the human family.”

“All power if given into His hands, that He may dispense rich
gifts unto men, imparting the priceless gift of His own righteousness
to the helpless human agent. This is the message that God
commanded to be given to the world. It is the third angel’s message,
which is to be proclaimed with a loud voice, and attended with the
outpouring of His Spirit in a large measure.”

(1896, Special Testimony To Battle Creek Church)

The following quotations are taken from “Waggoner On The

Gospel Of John”, which was written by E. J. Waggoner, as printed
from The Present Truth December 22, 1898 through June 1, 1899.
Which is two years after the message of righteousness by faith.
CHRIST THE BEGINNING.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning
with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him
was not anything made that was made.”
“This Divine Word appeared in the person of Jesus of
Nazareth; for “the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among
us,” and John bore witness of Him, saying, “He that cometh
after Me is preferred before me; for He was before me.”
This settles the question of the pre-existence of Christ,
for all who have any respect for the Bible as the Word of
God. It is true enough that the flesh of Jesus, that is, His
fleshly body, was not in the beginning with God, the Creator
of all things; for “when he cometh into the world, He saith,
Sacrifice and offering Thou wouldst not, but a body hast Thou
prepared for Me.” Heb. 10:5. But “the flesh profiteth
nothing;” it is the Spirit that qickeneth; and the life that
animated the flesh of Jesus, and which is the real person, was
the Word which was in the beginning with God, and which
was God. So while cavillers may amuse themselves by
playing upon words, we rejoice in the full assurance that this
Jesus is the only begotten Son of God, the brightness of the
Father’s glory, and the express image of His person.
Jesus Christ Himself is the Beginning. Col.1:18. He is
“the beginning of the creation of God.” Rev.3:14. He is the
power of God and “the wisdom of God.” 1 Cor.1:24.
Therefore it is He who speaks in the eighth chapter of
Proverbs, saying, “I walk in the way of righteousness, in the
midst of the paths of judgment; that I may cause those that
love Me to inherit substance, and that I may fill their
treasuries. The Lord possessed Me in the beginning of His
way, before His works of old, I was set up from everlasting
from the beginning, or ever the earth was.” Prov.8:20-23
On this last text it may be remarked that the words “set
up” are from one Hebrew word meaning anointed, so that
the meaning is the same as in the second Psalm, “Yet have I
set My King upon My holy hill of Zion.” The word is the same
in the Hebrew, and it will be noticed in the margin we have
“anointed” as the rendering of the Hebrew. Thus we learn
that Christ was the anointed King before the earth existed.
Moreover, the word “in” has really no place in the
twentieth verse of Proverbs 8, as there is nothing in the
Hebrew to indicate it. So we read, “The Lord possessed Me,
the Beginning of His way, before His works of old.” Still
further, it should be stated that the word “possessed” is the
very same that occurs in Gen. 4:1, where we read that on the
birth of Cain, Eve said, “I have gotten a man from the Lord.”
Therefore putting all these things together, we learn that
Jesus was brought forth “from the days of eternity” (Micah
5:2, margin), before anything was created, and that He
Himself is the beginning of all the ways of God, the firstborn
off all creation.” Col. 1:15. He is the Beginning of everything.
This must be taken to mean that Christ was begotten of the
Father somewhere way back in eternity. Many have a
problem with the words “begotten” and “created”. A study
on these two words will be attached. Also, being the
“firstborn” means that Christ is the one and only Son of God.
The firstborn son (Jesus) is head over all of God’s creation.

THE COMFORTER.

When Jesus was about to leave His disciples, He said

unto them, “And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you
another comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even
the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because
it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him; but ye know Him; for
He dwelleth in you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you
comfortless [orphans]: I will come to you.” John 14:16-18.
Jesus Himself is a Comforter. His presence is comfort. It
was because He was going away, that the hearts of the
disciples were troubled; and Jesus comforted them with the
assurance that He was going to the Father, to prepare a place
for them. Therefore we may know that “if any man sin, we
have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the
Righteous.” 1 John 2:1. The word rendered “Advocate”, in
the text is identical with that rendered “Comforter” in John
14:16. We have a Comforter with the Father, and “another
comforter” on earth with us. Surely we have no lack of
comfort.
This Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, is Christ’s own
representative, Christ’s own personal presence with us as He
could not be in the flesh. We know this in two ways from our
text. First, Jesus says, “I will not leave you orphans; I will
come to you.” So through the Spirit Christ is personally
present even when absent. If when talking to Nicodemus, He
could speak of Himself as “the Son of man, which is in
heaven” (John 3:13), now that He is on the right hand of God
in the heavens He may with equal truth speak of Himself as
with us.
In the second place, we know that the Spirit is but
Christ’s larger presence, so to speak, because the Comforter
is “the Spirit of truth” John 14:6. The Spirit of truth is
therefore Christ’s very essence. [see Webster’s 1828
Dictionary on ‘Essence’.] Having the Spirit, we have Christ
and all that He possess.
“I will not leave you orphans.” Christ is “the everlasting
Father” (Isa.9:6), and He is the living image of the Father, the
shining of His glory. Therefore the Holy Spirit, Christ’s
representative, who brings Christ’s own presence, brings also
the presence of the Father, so that with Him we are not
orphans. Through the Spirit we become sons of God,
members of His household, and the Father Himself is with us
all the time. No longer are we prodigal wanders from our
Father’s house, but sharers in His bounty.
Sometimes a person has to represent his own self in
court because he does not have a witness. This was
presented over the news just recently. So Jesus Christ is His
own representative by the Holy Spirit, who was given Him by
the Father. The Holy Spirit is actually the Spirit of the Father
and the Son. He is called the Third Person of the Godhead in
this sense. He is not a literal third person as many might like
to think of Him. We are not told what the ‘nature’ of the
Spirit is. We may never know. See Acts of the Apostles
p.51,52.
