The first grade newsletter provides information about upcoming events, what students are working on in class, and reading assessments. It notes that there are 20 students in the class, lists snack and word practice schedules for the week, and upcoming dates like Parent Teacher Organization meetings and popcorn sales. It also explains that the teacher will be using the Developmental Reading Assessment to evaluate reading levels and expects students to be at level 4 by the next progress report, putting intervention plans in place for those below that level.

DRA: I have started to assess your child’s reading abilities. To
do this, I use an assessment that common in all of Yale Public Schools, the DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment). In first grade, your child is expected to be at level 4 by progress report time (October 29th). At this point of the year, we focus on word recognition as well as decoding skills (being able to sound out unknown words). When your child reaches a level 12 (mid January-March), he/she will be tested on comprehension of what is read. If your child is not a level 4 at progress report time, we will put a reading intervention plan in place at conferences. Please look for their DRA level on their progress report! If you have any questions, please let me know!
I will be out of the building on Friday, October 22.
