Introduction to distance and time
Usain Bolt broke the 100m world record in
a time of 9.58 seconds.

Distance / Time = Speed

100m (distance) / 9.58s (time) = 10.44m/s (speed)

Different types of speed
Instantaneous speed
Instantaneous speed is the speed of a body at any particular instant

Average speed
Average speed is the mean of the body’s speed of motion over a period of
time. This is the figure produced from a Speed = Distance / Time equation.

Units of speed
The SI unit for speed is metres per second, which can be shortened to:
• m/s
• ms-1

What would the shape of a distance/time graph be for a bike travelling at

10m/s, stopping at a traffic light and then moving off at 15m/s?
