Solving Equations
of the form x + bx + c = 0.
2
There is a property that
we need to understand in
order to solve these
equations by factoring.
It is called the
“Zero Product Rule.”
It says that if two numbers
multiplied equal zero, one of
them has to be zero.
If (a)(b) = 0,
then either
a=0
or
b = 0.
x  3x  18
2

In order to use the

Zero Product Rule, we set the
equation equal to zero.
x  3x  18
2

18  18
x  3x  18  0
2

( x  6)(  3)
Thenxwe 0
factor
( x  6)( x  3)  0
If (a)(b) = 0,
then either
a = 0 or b = 0.
( x  6)( x  3)  0
x6  0 x3 0
6 6 3 3
x6 x  3
Solutions: x = 6 or -3
Another example:

m = 4m – 3
2

Subtract 4m and add 3:

m – 4m + 3 = 0
2
m – 4m + 3 = 0
2

Factor:

(m – 3)(m – 1) = 0
(m – 3)(m – 1) = 0

m3  0 (m – 1) = 0
Add 3: Add -1:
m3 m=1
m3 m=1
Solutions :

m = 3 or 1
