(12.4) Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring
(12.4) Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring
4)
Solving Equations
of the form x + bx + c = 0.
2
There is a property that
we need to understand in
order to solve these
equations by factoring.
It is called the
“Zero Product Rule.”
It says that if two numbers
multiplied equal zero, one of
them has to be zero.
If (a)(b) = 0,
then either
a=0
or
b = 0.
x 3x 18

18 18
x 3x 18 0

( x 6)( 3)
Thenxwe 0
factor
( x 6)( x 3) 0
If (a)(b) = 0,
then either
a = 0 or b = 0.
( x 6)( x 3) 0
x6 0 x3 0
6 6 3 3
x6 x 3
Solutions: x = 6 or -3
Another example:
m = 4m – 3
2
m – 4m + 3 = 0
2
m – 4m + 3 = 0
2
Factor:
(m – 3)(m – 1) = 0
(m – 3)(m – 1) = 0
m3 0 (m – 1) = 0
Add 3: Add -1:
m3 m=1
m3 m=1
Solutions :
m = 3 or 1
