In your own words, give the meaning of each of the following excerpts from the Emancipation
Proclamation:
1. “I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of
States, are, and henceforward shall be free...”

2. “And I hereby enjoin upon the people so declared to be free to abstain from all violence, unless in
necessary self-defense...”

3. “And I further declare and make known, that such persons of suitable condition, will be received into
the armed service of the United States to garrison, forts, positions, stations, and other places, and to
man vessels of all sorts in said service.”

1. The Civil Rights Act of 1875 ended racial segregation in restaurants, hotels, and transportation. If
that is true, then why was there so much segregation for the first half of the 1900's?

2. Why were some people, specifically Elizabeth Cady Stanton, upset about the 15th Amendment? Do
you agree with them? Why or why not?

3. What are some of the problems Grant's advisers faced? Be specific.

4. What did southerners do in the south to prevent African Americans from voting as a result of civil
rights reversals of the 1870's?
