Islamic Architecture: Colors that reveal light
Dr. Noureddine Zemmouri, Associate Professor
Department of Architecture University of Biskra Algeria
According to Islamic theosophy the world of being is classified in two classes: the visible and
the spiritual or the manifest and the hidden.
Through centuries Islamic Architecture has used many principles and symbols to reveal the
unseen and release the inner beauty of the architectural forms.
Colors and light are essential tools in this act of transformation. They are used for the
prescription of Architecture in the design process but they can also be used for the
description of Architecture that is the analysis of forms.
Through a mosaic of outstanding buildings in the Islamic world this essay raises questions
about the significance of these two tools and to provoke a discussion on how to interpret it
at two different levels. One is the level of perceiving and the second one is of reading.
