Prozac (fluoxetine hydrochloride) is a widely prescribed antidepressant that has been used since 1986-1987. It works by increasing serotonin availability in the brain, which produces a "feel good" reaction. Experiments also show growth of new neurons within a month. Prozac is indicated for depression, OCD, bulimia, panic disorders, and PMS. It should be avoided in children due to risks of increased impulsivity and suicide attempts. Special precautions are needed if taking Prozac during pregnancy or with liver/kidney disease. Side effects may include nausea, restlessness, and sexual dysfunction.
